1 Documentation& Works Cited
Research Paper

2 Documentation As a writer, you must give credit whenever you use another person’s ideas, opinions, or theories. You must give credit when you are paraphrasing, summarizing, or quoting a source directly. You need to cite any source used as follows: in the body of the paper as a parenthetical citation (in-text citation) in a works cited list at the end of the paper

3 Parenthetical Documentation
Include the source of each piece of information in parentheses at the end of the sentence or sentences where the information appears. Parenthetical documentation generally includes the author’s last name and the page number in parentheses. (Howard 12)

4 Parenthetical Documentation
Special Cases: Author already mentioned in sentence – use page number only (63) Author unknown (Internet source)– use a shortened title of work (“Character of Caesar”) Multiple authors – use last names for up to three authors (Roberts and Smith ) for more than three authors, use the first author’s last name followed by et al. (Kensington et al. 57)

5 Parenthetical Documentation
Special Cases: More than one work by an author – include shortened name of work (Cross, Interpretations 84) More than one source – information for each source separated by semicolons (Garber 45; Smith 234) A quote said by someone OTHER THAN the source - use the term “qtd. in…” in your citations (qtd. in Smith 49).

6 Works Cited Includes any source quoted or directly referred to in the paper. Works are listed in alphabetical order by author’s last name or title.

7 Works Cited Alphabetizing:
If a work has no specific author, list it by its title. When a title begins with A, An, or The, alphabetize by the first letter of the next word. If you have multiple works by the same author, list them in alphabetical order by title. If you have multiple works by the same author, only list the name in full the first time. For the following entries, use three hyphens in place of the name (---).

8 Works Cited Capitalize and center title: Works Cited
Formatting: Capitalize and center title: Works Cited Leave a 1-inch margin at the top, bottom, and sides of each page Indent second and subsequent lines in entries (reverse indentation aka hanging indent) Double –space No extra space between sources No bullets, numbers, or headings
