Writing and Grammar (WaG) #1 Title Punctuation

Please look carefully at the following samples to determine what you notice about title punctuation. What writing or grammar rules can you identify?  1a – Many students say that their favorite novel is John Green’s novel The Fault in Our Stars.  1b – My favorite book, though, is The Maze Runner by James Dashner.

Please look carefully at the following samples to determine what you notice about title punctuation. What writing or grammar rules can you identify?  2a – Shelby read an article in People Magazine.  2b – Shelby read the article “Is Texting Communication?” in Time Magazine.  2c – Dylan loves the song “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey.  2d – Dylan’s favorite song is from Journey’s album Escape.

Please look carefully at the following samples to determine what you notice about title punctuation. What writing or grammar rules can you identify?  3a – Robert Frost’s poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay” is quoted in S.E. Hinton’s novel The Outsiders.  3b – My favorite song from the musical Wicked is “Popular”.  3c – The best episode of The Walking Dead is “Better Angels” from Season 2.  3d – We’ll read “Charles,” one of Shirley Jackson’s most famous short stories this year. Let’s make a class list of the rules of title punctuation!

Title Punctuation Rules  Titles of long texts must be in italics (if typed) or underlined (if handwritten)  Novels  Movies  TV shows  Plays  Albums  Titles of shorter texts must be in quotation marks  Chapters  Poems  Episodes  Short Stories  Songs

Please copy these samples into the WaG section of your notebook.  If you like revenge stories, you’d love to read The Count of Monte Cristo.  “Billie Jean” is a classic Michael Jackson song from his album Thriller.  Do you think Robert Frost’s poem “The Road Not Taken” has an optimistic or pessimistic tone?  O. Henry’s short story ”Gift of the Magi” includes an ironic twist.  The movie Divergent was not as good as the book.

Now add at least 2 of your own examples that use correct title punctuation…
