End of Key Stage 1 Assessments Tuesday 1 st April pm
What are the end of Key Stage 1 assessments? Previously known as SATs (statutory assessment tests) An assessment to attain your child’s national curriculum level before they enter Key Stage 2. The child’s level will be gained from the tests and the teacher’s ongoing assessments.
What tests will my child complete? Every child will complete a test or task for Reading, Writing and Mathematics. Ability appropriate No test for Science or Speaking & Listening
Reading Tests Your child’s class teacher will decide whether to give each child a level 2 or a level 3 test or a reading task. Level 2 and 3 Reading Tests Fiction and non-fiction texts Comprehension questions Some multiple choice answers and some require a sentence. Each text is separated by a break. Reading Task 1:1 activity with the teacher The book is shared together Questions asked about the text No written answers
Writing Tests Long Writing Test Usually a story or a report Whole class discussion time Time for planning A break between planning and writing time Total time given: 1 hour Short Writing Test Usually a poem or a poster/leaflet Whole class discussion time Time for planning A break between planning and writing time Total time given: 30 – 45 minutes
Writing Test (2) Spelling Test Two parts Dictation section Pictures and words section Number of correct answers is turned in a score which is added to the long and short writing score. Handwriting Score out of three is awarded Also added to the overall writing score.
Mathematics Tests Your child’s class teacher will decide whether to give your child a level 2 or a level 3 test or a mathematics task. Level 2 and 3 Tests Mental and written sections Equipment provided Teacher can help with reading of non- mathematical words Total time given: 1 hour Mathematics Task Less written answers More discussion More apparatus to demonstrate answers
How and where are the tests completed? Mainly in the classrooms but some in small rooms Desks will be separated Work completed in silence Clear instructions No specific dates
Who marks my child’s test or task? Your child’s class teacher will mark all test and task papers. Year 2 teachers moderate all results together Year 3 teachers are involved REMEMBER your child’s final National Curriculum level is not decided purely on the task/test but from assessments that have been completed since September
How can you help? Don’t talk about SATs or ‘tests’ with your child No practice papers Don’t pressurise your child Complete homework as normal
How will I know how my child has done? Extra sheet of paper in end of year report with results Your child will receive a National Curriculum level for: Writing (this includes spelling and handwriting) Maths Reading Science Speaking & Listening
