Key Stage 1 SAT’s

Why? What? When? What do they mean? What am I told? How can I help?

Changes this year. Reading Test: Paper 1 combined reading prompt and answer booklet/ Paper 2 reading booklet and separate answer booklet (like old Level 3) Grammar, punctuation and spelling: Paper 1 Spelling/ Paper 2 Questions Maths Paper 1 Arithmetic/ Paper 2 reasoning Science, Speaking and Listening and Writing all done through Teacher Assessment.

When? No set date but have to be administered during May……. w/c May 9 th KS2 SATs w/c May 30 th Holiday Some schools selected to administer one test in April so this would not be retaken in May.

What do they mean? Teacher assessment not tests! Levels no longer apply DfE have issued interim teacher assessment frameworks for teacher judgment at end of KS1. Teacher assessments have to be submitted by June 13 th. Moderation takes place across the LA.

Administering tests Both reading papers must be administered to ALL pupils. Papers have guidelines for timing but not strictly timed e.g. guidance of 30 mins for reading test. Teachers can use discretion in whether to give breaks in tests or to finish early. Practice questions in reading test 1 but not in test 2.

SPAG Spelling 20 words in approx 15 mins Test 2 Grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. Written paper approx 20 mins.

Maths Paper 1. 20 mins. Arithmetic. Tests fluency with whole numbers, place value and counting. Paper 2. 35 minutes. 5 aural questions then written questions. Latest news from DfE…….. No number equipment to be used, 3x table included….

Test scores Expected standard of tests will always be scaled score 100. Raw scores given for number of marks pupil receives in the test. Conversion table translates raw score into scaled score. This determines whether a child has “met the expected standard”.

3 standards Working towards the expected standard Working at expected standard Working at greater depth within the expected standard.

Who will take the tests All pupils who have completed programme of study for KS1 All pupils who are considered to be working at the standard of the test. If pupils can answer the easiest questions then they should be entered for the test. E.g. The only children who won’t be entered are those who can’t access the easiest questions.

Children not taking the tests Parents meet with class teacher and me to discuss. Receive a letter from me outlining decision. Have right of appeal.

What am I told? Reported result is TA grade. Teacher assessment is far more accurate than test grade, however, test grade is to be included in evidence used to arrive at TA. You have the right to ask what the test grade was, but it will not change the grade your child has been given by the teacher. At parents evening the teachers will talk about your child’s progress in each subject. They will not be able to predict the final grade at this stage as there is still a significant amount of time left in the year, and it tends to be a time when some of the children mature quite quickly. Your teacher will be able to tell you if your child’s progress is a cause for concern.

Working at expected standard Teachers have to have evidence that a pupil demonstrates consistent attainment of all the statements within the standard and all the statements in any preceding standard.

How can I help? Little and often is the key! Hear read every day and ask a couple of questions to check comprehension. Encourage your child to read more building reading stamina. Practice handwriting including increasing the speed. Talk about something and write a couple of sentences with your child. Practice spellings and number bonds. Use Mathletics. Practice counting forwards or backwards from any number in 1’s, 10’s or 100’s.

Any questions?
