In-text citations Notes

What’s text support? Text support is facts you use to prove your thesis. The text support for WODs come from the WOD packet the teacher gives you. You need to quote these articles in your body paragraphs! And…whenever you quote something, you also need in text citations.

What’s a quote? Quote definition: using another author’s exact words. When you quote, you will place the “exact words from the author” you are using in quotation marks. Then you need to use an in-text citation to cite it!

What’s an in text citation? In-text citations definition: Placing source information in parentheses after a quote or a paraphrase from the text.

The in-text citation is always… In parentheses and at the end of a sentence. The author’s name goes inside of the parentheses The period goes on the outside of parentheses. There is NEVER a period inside the parentheses.

The in-text citation is always… In parentheses and at the end of a sentence.

What if I’m using a direct quote from a source? The last quotation mark is before the parentheses For Example: The author’s research found, “This quote from the text” (Author’s Last Name).

What if there is no author? Use the title of the text instead of the author Put the name of the text in “Quotation Marks” For example: This sentence doesn’t have an author, but that’s okay (“Fake Title”).

What if I’m using a quote that someone in the text is saying? YOU MUST STILL PUT THE AUTHOR’S NAME IN PARENTHESES For example: The character said, “This is a direct quote from the character” (Author’s Last name).

What goes in parentheses? ("Drivers on Cell Phones are as Bad as Drunks”)

What goes in parentheses? (Thierer)

Outline!

Homework Thesis statement for the cell phone prompt – Include the words “law” “cell phones” – Opinion: Do you think there should or should not be a law against cell phones? – Reasons: must be specific and be able to be proven in an entire paragraph – Bad: There should not be a law against cell phones while driving because there are not that many accidents and people can drive fine using a phone. – NO NO NO NO NO: “I think…”
