Body Systems Unit 6

Integumentary System Skin is the major organ Also contains 3 layers of tissue: – Epidermis-outer layer – Dermis- “true skin”, contains blood vessels and lymph – Hypodermis- made up of fatty tissue

Functions - Protection- from sun, bacteria -Sensory perception – sense pain, cold, warmth, etc. -Temperature regulation – help body retain or lose heat by dilating and constricting -Storage- stores fat, glucose, water, vitamins, and salts -Absorption- medications -Excretion- perspiration - Production- vitamin D from the sun

Pigments Albino – absence of pigmentation Erythema – reddish color of the skin due to burns or a congestion of blood in the vessels Jaundice – yellowish skin due to and increase of bile in the blood due to liver or gall bladder disease Cyanosis – bluish discoloration caused by insufficient O2 or poisoning

Diseases/Conditions of the Integumentary System Acne vulgaris- inflammation of sebaceous glands; cause unknown Athlete’s foot- fungal infection Skin cancer- basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma Dermatitis- from cosmetics or anything that irritates the skin Eczema-inflammation caused by an allergen

Diseases/Conditions of the Integumentary System Impetigo – skin infection caused by strep or staph Psoriasis – noncontagious, inherited skin disease, white silver scales Ringworm- highly contagious fungal infection Verrucae – warts, caused by a viral infection
