1 Increment 1 Lessons Learned Many things are not happening as predicted. Major differences are: –Scheduling and stowage –Turnaround times for troubleshooting –Communications with the crew We are still pre-5A, so there will be some changes when MCC-H assumes lead control center role. –Some post-5A processes are not yet well-defined.

2 Scheduling and Stowage Scheduled times vs. actual times for activities: –In general, activities are taking longer to perform than the time allocated. –Some of this is due to stowage; they have trouble finding things. –Some is also due to on-board systems (e.g. computers) working differently or more slowly than expected. Inventory and stowage: –The crew is having a hard time finding things. –Getting things out of stowage, organized, and ready to perform an activity is taking longer than expected. –The crew has requested (and received) several dedicated days for nothing but organization and inventory management.

3 Troubleshooting Challenges Troubleshooting payload hardware has been a challenge: –Due to Early Comm, OCA is the only real-time video available. –No real-time interaction with crew during troubleshooting. –“Negative reporting” philosophy makes it difficult to find out exactly what happened during payload operations. Results are obtained through Ship’s Log or after-the-fact voice calls. –Once results are obtained, PD teams need several days to assess and develop procedures. –Due to planning cycle constraints, inputs to daily plans, new procedures, and uplink messages must be in at least two days prior to execution. –On Increment 1, we’ve been able to get MACE II troubleshooting sessions about once per week for one to three hours.

4 Space-to-Ground Communications Use of comm assets is an integrated concept: –Houston and Moscow each talk on each others’ comm assets. –There is English spoken over Russian ground sites, and Russian spoken through U.S. assets (OCA). Simultaneous translation is difficult to listen to, but since the languages can switch, it’s important to keep both S/G and Terp loops punched up. It’s more important than ever to keep loop traffic to a minimum at these times.
