What is Poetry? Poetry Basics Purpose: to entertain Structure: lines & stanzas Lines may not contain punctuation, but a break indicates a completed thought The speaker is the voice or narrator of the poem Poems do not have to rhyme, but rhyme and rhythm create a songlike quality Poetry relies on figurative language and imagery to convey its message
