DIVERSITY UNIVERSITY 3rd Grade Website Holli Jost

Home Page Diversity University is a website dedicated to teaching 3rd graders about their roles and responsibilities in regard to diversity within their families and communities The site includes pages for different types of information, resources, projects, games, research, presentations, etc. External links will be provided to provide the students with additional resources.

Families Tab: Learners will compare and contrast similarities and differences in families of the past and present. Learners will learn about their role within their own family, what makes a family, how families are different in different places and how mafilies get along and how families do not get along and healthy relationships will be discussed. Students will use an activity to create pictorial representations of their own families The page layout will be simple and easy to navigate. Information in the form of a video and there will be basic information presented in text. A type of word bank format will be used to allow the students to compare and contrast and a picture bank will be used to allow the students to create the pictorial representations of their own families.

Communities Introduction video “Being Different is Beautiful” by LittleSikhs.com. Students will be given information to encourage thought about how people in communities work together and the kinds of things people do to help each other out. Students will be shown the parallels between family and community. The students will then use the “Journals” tab to write a journal entry by choosing one community member from a bank of community members and describe how that community member helps out in the community.

Citizenship The citizenship tab will feature and informative video describing citizenship. Information will include the ways family, groups and community influence the choices that individual’s make in regard to citizenship. I am developing some type of activity that will allow the student to have the opportunity to use the information that they learn about personal choices and the affects on themselves and others that result from these choices. This activity will be included under the citizenship tab.

Diversity The diversity tab contains information on both culture and diversity. I am working on a unit to be incorporated into this page that defines culture, explores how cultural diversity affects people’s lives, and contains matching activities using both pictures and definitions for the student to complete upon the conclusion of the diversity unit.
