4 BRITANNICA SCHOOL EDITION  1 st Grade Example: Theodore Roosevelt  Britannica School Edition provides articles and images about different subjects.  When the search results are displayed you can chose either article or images.

5 DIGITAL LIBRARY OF GEORGIA  2 nd Grade Example: Mary Musgrove  Here you can find digital images of famous Georgians.  There are also legal documents and newspaper articles.  Many items link to the New Georgia Encyclopedia.

6 SIRS DISCOVERER  3 rd Grade Example: Paul Revere  SIRS Discoverer lists different articles about Paul Revere  It also gives the Lexile number so you can find resources on the reading level of the students.

7 COBB VIRTUAL LIBRARY  Explore the following websites on the Cobb Virtual Library:  World Book Kids  Pebble Go  Culture Grams  Georgia’s Virtual Vault  Now for each one I want you to find one item of information about the following topics:  Grade K: U.S. Money  Grade 1: George Washington Carver  Grade 2: Jimmy Carter  Grade 3: Mississippi River

8 WORLD BOOK KIDS  3 rd Grade Example: Mississippi River  On World Book Kids, students are able to information about many different topics.  For each article the students can listen to the article be read out loud. The Lexile information is given for each article.  This resource also provides photographs and maps.

9 PEBBLE GO  2 nd Grade Example: Jimmy Carter  This is a great resource for finding information about people.  There is a time line and video for each person. Their life is broken up into five different tabs that explain about their life.  For teachers, there is an activity worksheet to help the students take notes.

10 CULTURE GRAMS  K Grade Example: U.S. Money  Culture Grams gives information about countries and states. It shows what different countries look like through pictures and videos.  One interesting feature is that it gives recipes from different countries.  Also gives information on history, lifestyle, society and culture for a country.

11 GEORGIA’S VIRTUAL VAULT  1 st Grade Example: George Washington Carver  Provides photographs of different people that influenced Georgia.  It provides manuscripts, photographs, maps, and government records from 1733 to the present.

13 LIBRARY OF CONGRESS  1 st Grade Example: Thomas Jefferson  The Library of Congress Digital Collection includes all types of information in a digital format. There are videos, pictures, maps, manuscripts etc. to view on this website.

14 PICTURE HISTORY  K Grade example: White house  Picture History is a website that provides images of different time periods, buildings, people, etc. in history.  The pictures are all primary sources of information.

15 TEACHING HISTORY  2 nd Grade Example: Jackie Robinson  This website gives teachers materials, content and best practices.  There are videos, lesson plans, and photographs.

16 PBS TEACHERS  3 rd Grade Example: Ancient Greece  PBS Teachers offers a variety of lesson plans, videos, and online activities for students and teachers.  There are articles with photographs and videos from television programs such as NOVA and Nature.

17 INTEGRATION  How do you integrate these sources into your lessons?  Here is a second grade example:  Standards:  Social Studies  SS2HI.a Identifies and describes historical figures and their contributions  Identifies and describes the contributions of James Oglethorpe, Mary Musgrove, and Tomochichi  English Language Arts  ELACC2RI1: Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.  21 st Century Learner (AASL)  1.1.4 Find, evaluate, and select appropriate sources to answer questions.  National Technology Standards for Students and Teachers  Teachers 3 d. 18 INTEGRATION  While studying your important figures, use web-based resources to have students ask and answer WH questions.  In a pair, have students go to two different web-based resources on each person. Have each student write a who, what, where, when, why and how question from the information on that page. Then have the students switch questions and have the students answer their partners questions.  In addition you can incorporate writing by having them write a paragraph about each person.
