3 General INCLUSION What is Inclusion? Inclusion is the placement of special-needs students in the general education classroom environment. Inclusion is based upon the belief that all students can learn.

4 General INCLUSION How To Set Up The Classroom Environment For Inclusion One of the first steps is to establish a “Circle of Friends” Pause the video and go to the website: Circle of Friends Explore RESOURCES to find other sites that refer to classroom organization.

5 General INCLUSION What Does Inclusion Look Like? Who will be affected by the decision to include special-needs students in regular education classrooms? Several websites exist with links to parent, teacher, and principal comments. Many good books have been written on this topic.

6 General INCLUSION Choosing The Right Setting Most special-needs students benefit from the use of a variety of classroom strategies. Cooperative learning Lab work Project-based instruction Most “group” settings allow a student the opportunity to participate successfully. To what level and degree the student can participate is dependant on his/her disability.

Other students will follow the regular discipline management plan. It depends on the needs of the individual student.

9 General INCLUSION The Committee Every committee will be a little different depending on the needs of each individual student. As a classroom teacher, some items to know Going into the committee meeting are: Some knowledge of the student’s IEP (Individual Education Plan) Understand what things work best for you as a classroom teacher to match with the needs of the student. Questions for the parents relating to the successes they have had in the past.

10 General INCLUSION What Will Inclusion Do For Your School? 1. Self-esteem will increase. 2. Pride in accomplishment by students. 3. Strength in community involving everyone. 4. Parental involvement will increase. 5. Teacher training will improve. The strength of inclusion is that it improves the education of ALL students as they learn together.
