WHAT IS ENERGY? The ability to do work Energy is how things change and move It comes from a variety of places and in a number of forms Photo credit:

Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but rather, can be converted between different forms WHERE ENERGY COMES FROM? Photo credit:

WHAT IS ELECTRICITY?

A form of energy resulting from charged particles. The charge is created by the flow of electrons moving through a conductor. The charge can not build up. STATIC ELECTRICITY CURRENT ELECTRICITY Imbalance of electrical charges on an insulator. Charges can be transferred by friction, but do not flow because the charge does not move.

ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT

HOW IS ELECTRICITY ME ASURED ?

HOW IS ENERGY MEASURED? Photo credits: Electric energy is measured in Watt-hours (Wh) 100 Watts on for 10 hours is 1000 Watt-hours or one kiloWatt hour (1 kWh) Electric power is measured in Watts. Power is the rate or how fast energy is being consumed A 100-watt light bulb consumes energy at a rate of 100 Whours/hour (100W)

Environment Protecting & conserving resources Preventing pollution & other negative environmental effects Save money At home Globally (job creation; innovation) Quality of life For example, creating a more comfortable home with insulation WHY SAVE ENERGY Photo credit:

Reducing our consumption of electricity and energy resources. ENERGY EFFICIENCY What is energy efficiency? Efficiency Nova Scotia offers service, advice, and financial support for saving energy and money. With their efforts, we’re building a stronger economy and environment together, through energy efficiency.

HOW TO SAVE ENERGY What YOU can do: 1. Turn lights off when not in use 2. Unplug electronics and other devices when not in use 3. Use smart power strips when devices need to remain on 4. Stop drafts from coming in your windows and doors 5. Put on a sweater, and turn down the heat Photo credit: |

HOW TO SAVE ENERGY What you can encourage OTHERS to do: 1. Use cold water when doing laundry 2. Hang clothes to dry instead of using a dryer 3. Use LED light bulbs 4. Use energy efficient appliances 5. Have upgrades made to old houses (e.g., insulation)

Timed Power Strip Prevents phantom power by turning all electronics & other devices off & on at desired times Smart Power Strip Shuts down products that go into standby mode, while keeping other products on, such as recording devices or other items that need to continually be running DIFFERENT POWER STRIPS Photo credits: |

Energy meters are tools to understand how much energy specific things consume. Different from the utility meter on the side of a building. ENERGY METERS Photo credit:

THANK YOU Now let’s save energy!

If your electronics are turned off but are still plugged or in standby mode, they may still be using energy. Although it may be a very small amount, it still costs you money, and is wasteful. Unplugging or using specific types of power strips will stop phantom power from running to your devices by shutting them off when not in use. Phantom Power Video PHANTOM POWER Photo credit:
