Stress

The body’s and mind’s reaction to everyday demands or threats. KKinds of stress DDistress Negative Stress Alters the ability to be successful EEustress Positive stress Causes and individual to take action

 Biological Illness, Disabilities, Injuries  Environmental Poverty, Pollution, Crowding, Noise, natural Disasters  Cognitive The way you perceive a situation  Personal Behavior Negative reactions in the body and mind caused by choosing poor behaviors  Life Situation Death of a pet, Separation or Divorce of Parents, Troubled Relationships

 WHEN AN INDIVIDUAL PERCEIVES A SITUATION OR EVENT TO BE A THREAT, YOUR BODY BEGINS A STRESS RESPONSE

TWO MAJOR BODY SYSTEMS 1. NERVOUS 2. ENDOCRINE

THE BODY’S RESPONSE IS LARGELY INVOLUNTARY, OR AUTOMATIC. IT HAPPENS IN THREE STAGES AND CAN OCCUR WHETHER THE STRESS IS PHYSICAL OR EMOTIONAL, POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE.

ALARM STAGE Hypothalamus – small nerve center at the base of the brain – excited by the stressor. Pituitary Gland – secrets a hormone called adrenaline. “Fight or Flight” Response

RESISTANCE STAGE Physical resistance to the stressor reaches it peak. Accomplish incredible feats of strength. The body functions at a higher-than-normal level.

FATIGUE STAGE The body and mind become worn down. Physical Fatigue Pathological Fatigue Psychological Fatigue
