Scheduling Timetable February/March Review elective descriptions Schedule appointment with your career mentor Consult senior peers Place top elective selections in preference order on OASIS by March 7 th

Scheduling Timetable Lottery selections and assignments will be completed March 22 nd Changes to student programs may be made by dropping and adding in OASIS beginning March 24 th

Fourth Year Requirements Ten 4-week and Two 2-week rotation periods are available You must take: One 4-week selective period in Surgery One 4-week selective period in Critical Care Medicine (Pulmonary, Cardio, ER, Renal, Critical Care) Pediatrics (NICU, PICU, Ped’s ER, Cardio) One 4-week selective period as a Sub-I selective from Family Medicine, Medicine, OB-Gyn, or Pediatrics (A 2 nd Critical Care selective may be used as a substitute for this requirement.). All of the above must be a CU elective

Fourth Year Requirements One 4-week period may be for interviewing Recommend taking between OCT and JAN If preferred, one additional off/on-campus elective may be scheduled for this month (i.e., 4 extramural electives vs. 3 extramural electives)

Fourth Year Requirements Six additional electives must be selected Only three extramural (outside of Creighton) electives are allowed Only exceptions: If student uses interviewing month for a fourth extramural elective If student schedules June and May two-week electives – opens up another four-week block No more than three identical electives may be scheduled as part of your nine required electives

Scheduling Instructions 4th year Elective Proposed Program Form: Fill in your name Fill in name of your faculty advisor Examine 4 th year elective descriptions Find out as much as you can about electives from your career mentor, M4s, and myself regarding interests, residency plans, etc.

M4 Year: Activity Priority – Consider the Following M3 make-up work must be completed early (before any M4 electives may be taken) ILAC program (June and July) Military extramurals (wrap around September 30 th date) Investigating residency choices (early in year) Solidifying skills before extramurals (early) Letters of Recommendation Residency and practice location extramurals (July through January; best months are November, October, September, August – I recommend against July)

M4 Year: Activity Priority – Consider the Following Extramurals unavailable at Creighton (anytime) Interview time early match (September through December) regular match (October through January) USMLE Step 2 CK & CS (June through early- March – remember, early is the trend) Keep in mind that CS sites/slots fill up quickly Register for CS NOW – permit is good for one calendar year

Handy and Useful Sources of Information M4 elective descriptions on OASIS M4s Course directors Career mentors Curriculum coordinators Associate Dean for Student Affairs After completing Proposed Program Form and obtaining your career mentor’s signature, return a copy of the completed form to Student Affairs by March 5 th (no exceptions)

Off Campus Electives Planning Extramural electives must be approved by: Career Mentor Chairperson of corresponding department at Creighton University Maximum of 3 externships allowed (no more than 3 identical electives)

Off Campus Electives Planning Off campus may be taken at: Practice sites with approved residency programs Military residency programs LCME-accredited medical schools For medical schools participating in VSAS, see information on their electives and application at See AAMC Extramural Elective Compendium website ctives/start.htm ctives/start.htm

Planning Continued... For schools not participating in VSAS, many have information available on their WEB site Office of Student Affairs provides information (letter) on request about student’s clinical experience, background checks, malpractice and health insurance, tuition status, evaluations required, etc. This information is provided automatically to schools who you apply to through VSAS.

Approval continued... Extramural Approval Sheet must be signed and recorded in Office of Student Affairs at least 30 days before leaving for extramural Evaluation sheet for program instructor will be given upon final approval of extramural by Office of Student Affairs

Approval Continued... A previously scheduled Creighton elective must be removed by drop/add process 14 days prior to rotation date You are responsible for notifying the extramural program if you decide not to attend This courtesy maintains a good relationship with programs for future students

Off Campus Electives: In a Nutshell Signed Extramural Approval Sheet insures course credit for off-campus elective Evaluation form must be returned to receive a grade for extramural rotation Any previously scheduled Creighton elective must be dropped or the entire month will be recorded as a failure.
