The name comes from the town of Marathon in Greece. In the first Olimpic marathons was playing at a distance of 40 km. Michel Bréal, French physiologist, inspiered by the history of race suggested Pierre de Coubertin, turned to run over a distance corresponding to the distance from Marathon to Athens to that of the first modern Olympic Games in Athens.
