1 «From the History of the Olympic Games» Author: Kruhmaleva Alena Form: 4 «A» School: №19 Teacher: Neretina Olga Sergeevna

2 The original Olympic Games began in ancient Greece in 776 b. c.
The people wanted to live in peace with their neighbours. That`s why small states stayed out of wars. All wars were stopped in Greece.

3 The first games were called the Olympic Games and were held about a thousand years before our era.

4 These games were a part of a festival including competitions in wrestling, long jumps, foot racing, rowing, running and others. All athletes promised to compete honestly and keep the rules.

5 The games were for men only.
Greek women couldn`t participate and also watch the Olympics.

6 The winners were called «olympionics»
The winners were called «olympionics». They received the first awards immediately after the competition. The herald would place a palm branch in his hands; red ribbons were tied on his head and hands(as a mark of victory). Also they were awarded olive wreaths and cups of olive oil. This tradition has survived. The herald announce the name of the Olympic winner, his father`s name and his homeland.

7 The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896.

8 People from many countries practiced different kinds of sports and games. They wanted to make friends and compete with sportsmen from other lands.

9 In 1908 the women were allowed to compete for the first time.

10 After the Second World War (1945) the Olympic Games are held every fourth year in different countries.

11 No Olympic Games can start without the Olympic Flame, the symbol of friendly competition, which comes from Greece on Olympia.

12 The Olympic emblem is five linked rings: blue, yellow, black, green and red. It means five continents. Any national flag contains at least one of these colours.

13 The words of Baron Pierre de Coubertin: «It`s a great honor to win, but still a greater honor to compete» became an Olympic motto.

14 The idea of the Olympic Games means friendship and cooperation among the people of the world.
Real peace can be achieved through sport!
