Our blog is our primary method to communicate school and classroom news and events. If you have a specific question, please use our address. Link to blog: SECOND GRADE BLOG

iPad Research is normally conducted on Wednesdays. This helps prepare students for 21 st century job skills. Also, standardized testing is moving to computer in the next few years, so this is also good preparation for this testing. Grades are not generally taken on this; however, some will be. No grades will be taken on research the first 9 weeks of school as students make this transition. This research also helps extend the curriculum and allows students to be in control of their learning. IPAD RESEARCH

Students will write journals regarding various topics of study throughout the week. Process writing will be weekly. Grady County requires second grade to do three modes of writing throughout the year: narrative, informative, and persuasive. Persuasive is the most difficult of the three. Writing is a higher order thinking skill that allows us to gage learning. WRITING

Your child is expected to know their addition and subtraction (0- 18) by the end of the year, and must pass the Grady County timed fact tests. Students have daily math fact practice. Parents will be informed if students are not passing practice tests and your help at home is required. MATH FACTS

Our ALPHA/Advanced Content class will participate in a Genius Hour Project. It will be due the third 9 weeks of school. It is mandatory for all ALPHA children and extra credit for any student in the Advanced Content class. More information will be sent home at a later date. GENIUS HOUR

Students will have homework every night except Fridays in Reading and Math. All students receive a yellow folder just for homework and papers. Science and Social Studies homework is very rare. HOMEWORK

Our main methods of communication are and the blog. Our addresses are: Amy Fowler- Marie Maxwell- Katina Stewart- PARENT COMMUNICATION

AR is an incentive program to encourage students to read and is not part of their reading grade. Our focus is classroom instructional time, and AR will only be done during DEAR time. Students’ goals will be set according to our school’s AR policy chart. This means each child will have a different goal according to his/her reading ability. AR logon information will be sent home in your student’s AR folder, so you can stay abreast of your child’s progress. AR login: AR

Once a month during Science/Social Studies, our counselor, Mrs. DePlato, will come in and do a lesson with the students. These lessons normally cover things such as positive peer relationships, bullying, and friendships. COUNSELING LESSONS

All parents who intend on participating in field trips need to take the mandated reporter training class. This may be done online. If you took the training last year, your certificate is still good for this year. Field trips are a privilege for students. Good classroom behavior is expected for the opportunity to attend field trips. Any student who has continuous behavior problems may lose this privilege. We already have one field trip planned to the Joe Budd Youth Conservation Wildlife Center. It is scheduled for Thursday, April 7, FIELD TRIPS

Mrs. Stewart’s stationary bicycle is used to help students channel their excess energy, if necessary. Students who wear tennis shoes may ride the bike during non-instruction time. Students sign up on the board and another student is in charge of the timer. Students normally have three (3) minutes each to ride, so that all students are given at least one opportunity. BICYCLE

We encourage your child to bring a personal, SPILL PROOF water bottle. It is especially hot this time of year, so please feel free to send one. Only SPILL PROOF water bottles are allowed. WATER BOTTLES

Speak directly to the teacher if you have an issue that needs to be resolved. We cannot help if we do not know there is a problem. Check your child’s homework to see that it was done correctly. Have your child wear tennis shoes on PE days (everyday is easiest). Sign up for Powerschool so you can stay informed of your child’s academics. Sign in at the front office prior to visiting your child’s classroom. PLEASE DO

Continually check your student out early Be chronically absent Be chronically tardy Hesitate to let us know how we can help you and your child this year!!! PLEASE DON’T
