Grade 11 Course Selection Grade 10 Homeroom Teacher Presentation

2 Moving into Grade 11  All grade 10 subjects must be passed  Failed courses must be repeated in Summer School or in Grade 11 Caution:  Grade 10 courses are prerequisites for grade 11  Every grade 10 course taken in grade 11 takes away from credits that you need for graduation.

3 Grades Are Different!  Courses passed earn credits  You can choose elective courses  You can choose types of courses

4 Credit System in Grade  One period for one semester=1 credit  All grade courses are 1 credit except… -English 11 (2 credits-full year course) -Co-Op 12 (2 or 3 credits) -Career Exploration 11 (2 credits)  10 credits taken per year-Total 20

5 Course Levels  Level 1-Enriched university preparation (teacher recommendation required) e.g. English, Modern History, Math 111  Level 2-University, community college & private training technology programs e.g. English, Modern History, Math 112

6 Course Levels  Level 3-Non-technical community college & private training institutions e.g. English 113  Level 0-Not offered at other levels Will vary in difficulty. Some qualify for university entrance e.g. Law 120, Media Studies 120

7 Course Selection Process  Read Course Guide carefully  Counsellor presentations-Math classes  Discuss at home  Talk to teachers  March 16-Course Fair  March 21&22-Final course selection in HR Advisory

8 Choosing Courses  Choose compulsory courses first  Note if prerequisites required  Generally, take courses at your grade level

9 Choosing Courses  Consider sequences of courses  Consider future learning/career goals Work, community college, university, private training school, apprenticeship, military  Discuss everything with parents, teachers, counsellors

10 Courses Requiring Applications  Some courses require an application  All applications available at Guidance  All applications are due March 25

11 Graduation Requirements

12 To Graduate  Must pass all grade 10 courses  Must pass ELPA  Must pass all 7 grade compulsory credits  Must pass a minimum of 10 grade elective credits  Must be enrolled full time for at least 4 semesters during grades 11-12

13 Graduation Requirements  Compulsory Courses English 11 (full-year, 2 credits) Math 11 Science (pg. 6) History 11 Fine Arts & Life Development course (pg. 6) English 12  Total: 7 credits

14 Graduation Requirements  Must earn 17 out of 20 credits  7 credits are compulsory  Remaining 10 credits are elective  5 credits must be Grade 12 courses You are responsible for insuring that you meet graduation requirements!

Caution Graduation Requirements are not the same as Post-Secondary Admission Requirements

18 Now What?  Read course descriptions carefully  Course Name, Grade, Level  Prerequisites, Co-requisites, recommended prerequisites (very important)  At end of description course fees application required-all due March 25

20 Enter Compulsory Courses  Line #1: English 111, 112 or 113  Line #2: One of 3 Math 11 courses  Line #3: Modern History 111/112/113  Line #4: Science course (see Options)  Line #5: *Fine Arts & Life Role Development Course (see Options) *Can be taken in grade 12 if preferable

21 Enter Elective Courses  #6-9: Enter 4 courses (4 credits)  Consider prerequisites for grade 12 courses  Electives should support your post- secondary, career and personal interests

22 Enter Two Alternate Courses  Carefully consider and choose 2 additional courses that will be used if any of your chosen courses cannot be scheduled.  Do not leave this blank – you run the risk of being put into a course not of your choosing

23 Choosing Courses  Remember: You are responsible for meeting Grad Requirements  Remember: Post-secondary admission requires more than grad requirements!

24 Choosing Courses  Choose courses carefully.  Courses chosen by students. determine courses offered next year.  If you choose a course, you will be expected to remain in the course.  Once schedules have been created, course changes are not guaranteed.

25 Course Fair-March 16  This is your chance to find out about the courses that may be right for you. Period 4 (30 minutes)  Come back with your parents 4:00-6:00 PM

26 March 21 & 22 Homeroom Advisory  Return signed Course Selection Form  Transfer course selections to Scantron form using names and codes provided. BE CAREFUL WHEN CODING COURSES Accuracy is important to avoid being scheduled into the wrong courses!
