Paragraph 1 - AGREE Paragraph 2 - DISAGREE Use both the source and your own knowledge Use both the source and your own knowledge. You also need to comment on how typical the source is… Question 9a ’Homesteaders found conditions on the Plains very disappointing.’ Use the source and your knowledge to explain how far you agree with this interpretation. Paragraph 1 -USEFUL Paragraph 2 –NOT USEFUL / LIMITATIONS Use both the source and your own knowledge. You also need to comment on how typical the source is… However, this source is limited because in the source we can see… This is not accurate so would not be useful because… This is a typical view of the West from someone who has not been there and is trying to make it look better than it is (idealised). At this time… USEFULNESS (6) What is inaccurate in this painted view of the West?

Shows us the idealised image of what the East thought the West was like Shows us how and what people were advertising life in the West in What is inaccurate in this painted view of the West? Lots of trees No buffalo Buffalo would not live in a forest so neither would the Indians The image suggests harmony between the Indians and the homesteaders. Would the creator of this card know a lot about the West? Would they have lived there? What is useful about this source?

Question 9c Why was this poster published at that time? Use the source and your knowledge to explain your answer. MESSAGE PURPOSE To form a colony/militia/go to Kansas To encourage people to move West/Manifest Destiny You didn’t get marks for saying it was encouraging people to escape slavery as the slaves had been freed before this poster was made. This poster is encouraging ex-slaves to move West and start a new life on cheap land. PURPOSE (7) Think about the provenance (who created the poster? when? and why?

SO WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED ABOUT THE SOURCE QUESTIONS ON PAPER 1? Long answers are expected You need to refer specifically to the source You need to use A LOT of your own knowledge You need to comment on how typical the source is – look at WHO wrote it, WHEN they wrote it etc.

Explain reasons why the homesteaders wanted to live on the Plains: persecution/poverty in Europe or East America, ex- soldiers from the Civil War, ex-slaves from the South looking for a new start, drawn in by the opportunity of free land, lack of land in the East. Conclude by answering the question directly: Did they have the same reasons? They all wanted to be free but had different elements pulling and pushing them to live on the Plains.
