2. Source Questions How fully? This is a question which will ask about an overall issue and wants to find out how much you know on the subject The source will give you SOME of the relevant information but will not give the whole picture This means you must identify relevant information from the source AND include relevant information from your own knowledge. These have to be SUBSTANTIAL and EXPLAINED points to be credited with the marks.

3. How to answer There are TWO phases in answering this question – You must give the relevant points from the SOURCE and develop each point in terms of the question – YOU DO NOT NEED TO COMMENT ON THE AUTHOR,PURPOSE OR DATE!

4. Constructing your answer FIRST – give a General statement Source A partly explains the reasons for the migration of the Scots between 1830 and 1939. THEN use information from the source IN YOUR OWN WORDS – The source tell us that many Scots left their homes due to the systematic clearance of crofts in the Highlands, particularly in Sutherland. It goes on to mention how the people here often felt like they had no choice but to leave because they no longer had land to work on. The source goes on the mention how several highland landlords encouraged emigration by party paying for the passage to new lands such as Canada and Australia which led to more people moving abroad.

5. Phase 2 You must bring in your own knowledge to show there are other points relevant to the answer These MUST relate to the issue in the question!

The source does not mention the work of emigration agents, their job was to encourage new emigrants to their homelands by advertising at markets, holding meetings and publicising the benefits of their countries. 8. Be specific!!!!!!! LINK TO THE QUESTION However, the source fails to mention other key aspects around the reasons for the emigration of the Scots. The source does not mention the work of emigration agents, their job was to encourage new emigrants to their homelands by advertising at markets, holding meetings and publicising the benefits of their countries. Furthermore the source does not mention the Gold rush in California and Australia, this encouraged Scottish emigration as many went abroad to seek their fortune. Also, the source fails to mention that the success of Scots already abroad also encouraged people to move; people moved to join successful family members in places like Canada and Australia.

Source Comparisons Worth 4 marks To be successful in this question you must – Make clear the connections between two sources, but NOT describe them – AVOID only writing ‘Source A says’ and ‘Source B says’, you will not get marks for this – Explain the point you are making in your own words THEN use the sources to support your point – Repeat this pattern again to make 2 FULL comparisons

11. Example answer Make a general statement about whether the source agree or disagree on the overall issue in the question Find something relevant and more specific to the question that the sources agree about – The sources agree that population increased because of rising birth rate. Now go on to develop this comparison by picking out the relevant information in your own words THEN quoting evidence from the source – Source A says birth rate improved due to an improvement in health ‘women’s health improved so many more babies were born’. Source B tell us that the population increased due to people moving to cites and getting married sooner ‘Urbanisation increased the number of marriages so the birth rate rose’ – This is a DEVELOPED COMPARISON and worth 2MARKS – The EXACT same process applies if you are doing disagreements

12. Tips to remember You will always get one question that asks you to compare two sources in your exam (N5 and Higher) They are easy to spot because they are the only ones you do which refer to TWO sources. You DO NOT need any background knowledge, you need to be able to read and understand English! Try one….

13. ‘Describe’ questions The task in this question is to make 5 or 6 points from recalled knowledge that clearly help to answer the question that has been set. You will be credited for each accurate and relevant point. You can be credited for adding a developed point (more detail).

14. Example Q. Describe the problems facing the poor in the early 20th century. A. Poor people faced many different problems in Britain in the early twentieth century. Many poor people were unemployed and had no money to look after themselves and their families. Often the poor lived in overcrowded housing conditions, often living in a single room or sharing with other families. The cramped and damp housing conditions often led to ill health and disease could spread among the poor very easily. Poor people usually had very poor diets which also contributed to their poor health. Doctors had to be paid for at this time so many people often died without having been treated by a doctor as could not afford help. Another problem facing poor people at this time was that they did not have the opportunity to get a good education. This meant that poor people did not have the skills or qualifications to escape poverty.

15. ‘Explain’ questions For this question you need to give reasons why something happened and you must clearly link your evidence to the question. Aim to explain 5/6 individual points You must not just LIST evidence You must make it clear EXACTLY how these facts did or did not allow something to happen

16. Example Q. Explain the reasons why so many Irish people immigrated to Scotland A. There are many reasons which explain why Irish people immigrated to Scotland. Firstly people in Ireland were living in extreme poverty, particularly the Catholic population, this meant that they immigrated to seek a better lifestyle and employment in Scotland. The potato famine of 1845 - 1848 also caused Irish immigration as many people moved otherwise they would have faced starvation. The British government was very slow to deal with the famine crisis in Ireland so many took matters into their own hands and immigrated to Scotland rather than wait for help which may not come. Irish people also immigrated to Scotland because passage to Scotland was cheap meaning that even the very poor could often afford to come. Scotland was an attractive destination for Irish immigrants as there was no language barrier and many Irish shared religious and cultural roots with their Scots counterparts.
