1 GCSE Paper This presentation goes through paper one detailing the different question types and what you are required to do with each one. Paper One will be in the format that you practiced in Grade Book 2 and lasts 1hr 45mins. You will be given FOUR booklets- Paper 1A/B: Germany, 1890–1945: Democracy and dictatorship (answer booklet) Paper 1A/B: Germany, 1890–1945: Democracy and dictatorship (interpretations Booklet) Paper 1B/A: Conflict and tension, the First World War, 1894–1918 (answer booklet) Paper 1B/A: Conflict and tension, the First World War, 1894–1918 (Source booklet)

2 Paper 1A/B: Germany, 1890–1945: Democracy and dictatorship
The Germany paper has two interpretations (A and B) which you need to use to answer questions 01, 02 and 03. The three questions will be about the same thing e.g. in the mock Hitler’s appeal to the people of Germany? Before answering the questions read the two interpretations and annotate them. Look at: Who wrote the interpretation, when and to who? Think about what impact this might have on how they viewed events/ people Read the interpretation highlight the key points/ arguments- What is the persons view on the questions.

3 Question marks How does Interpretation B differ from Interpretation A about…. The first question will always be in the format above. You need to identify the arguments in the content of A and B and explain how they are different for example in GB2 Interpretation A argued that Hitler was a good speaker, that the Nazis had new ideas and that people believed they could defeat the Communists, whilst Interpretation B argues that the Nazis gained support because of the way the great depression affected different groups of German society.

4 Question marks Why might the authors of Interpretations A and B have a different interpretation about …..? Explain your answer using Interpretations A and B and your contextual knowledge. For this question you need to focus on the provenance of the Interpretations (who said it? When? to whom? Why?) Think about why the above things are going to make the two authors say different things. You need to apply your own knowledge to help

5 Question marks Which interpretation do you find more convincing about…….? Explain your answer using Interpretations A and B and your contextual knowledge. For this question you are looking at provenance and content/ argument. You also need to make about judgement about which one is the most convincing (the one you trust the most/ most closely matches your knowledge of what happened). This is a bigger and more challenging Q than 01 or 02 and therefore is worth a lot more marks make sure you comment on the content and provenance of both sources arguing why they make the interpretations convincing/ unconvincing.

6 Question 04- 4 marks Describe two problems faced by…
This is a straight forward (if you know it) knowledge recall question. Make sure you know all the difficulties faced by: The Kaiser The Weimar Governments The Nazis In running Germany and carrying out their policies: Make sure you add these to your revision grids

7 Question 05- 8marks In what ways did the lives of …….? (change)
Explain your answer. This is a question about change or impact on the lives of German people. Make sure you revise for each time period and theme how the German people are affected by the policies of the Kaiser, Weimar Government and Nazi government. Also look at major events and how they affected the lives of German people- WWI, Hyperinflation, the Great Depression, WW2 etc.

8 Question Marks Which of the following was the more important reason why ……: Reason 1 Reason 2 Explain your answer with reference to both bullet points. This is an extended cause question in which you have to evaluate the comparative importance of different causes. You need to explain how both the reasons helped cause the event or issue. You need to explain why one reason is more important than the other. For all the key events and issues try to revise at least two key reasons and decide which is the most important

9 Revision Activities- Question 04:
Make a list of all the issues that the German governments had problems doing, for example: Describe two problems faced by- Kaiser Wilhelm II’s governments in ruling Germany up to 1914. the German government in dealing with hyperinflation in 1923. the German government in dealing with Political unrest The German government dealing with the Great Depression The Nazi government in dealing with economic problems The Nazi government in dealing with opposition The Nazi government in gaining support for their ideas The Nazi government in bringing in their education policy.

10 Revision Activities- Question 05:
Come up with a list of all the times the lives of the German people were changed by events or policies and explain how they were changed: Events: Wars, economic problems (Hyperinflation 1923, Great Depression ), political unrest, Weimar culture Policies: Social policy under the Kaiser, Improvements under Stresemann, Nazi policies on education, women, racial policy, repression (secret police), propaganda, cultural policy, economic policy

You need to know multiple reasons why major events took place: Why the Kaiser abdicated in 1918 Why the Weimar Republic was in danger in the years 1919–1923 Why Stresemann was able to improve the economy in Germany Why the great depression happened in Germany Why there was a growth in support for extreme parties in Why Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany in 1933 Why the Nazis brought in social policies, education policies etc. Why the Nazis carried out the ‘Final Solution’/ Holocaust

13 Question 1- 4 marks Study Source A in the Sources Booklet.
Source A supports/ opposes………. How do you know? Explain your answer using Source A and your contextual knowledge. The Source will contain a view appoint either for or against the one stated in the question. You need to explain how you know this is the case based on the provenance (who said it, when, to who and why) of the source and its content. This could be a written or a picture source.

14 Question 02- 12 marks Study Sources B and C in the Sources Booklet.
How useful are Sources B and C to a historian studying….? Explain your answer using Sources B and C and your contextual knowledge. This answer requires that you evaluate both sources in terms of how useful they are. To do this look at: provenance (likely to be trustworthy? Propaganda? Likely to have knowledge that few would have?), what the source tells you about the topic and also use your own knowledge about what it doesn’t tell you. Sources can be written or picture sources. Make sure you make a judgement about which one is the most useful.

15 Things that make a source useful:
The person writing the source has first hand knowledge or is significant. The person is an expert on the topic e.g. a historian. The source has knowledge that only a few may have. The source has knowledge that you can confirm is accurate Usefulness is limited The source is propaganda or likely to be very one sided. The information in the source is misleading or inaccurate. It only tells you about part of what the question is asking you about.

16 Question 03- 8 Marks Write an account of…
This is straight forward (if you know it) knowledge recall question. The better the level of detail the higher the mark. For top marks try to link causes together and/ or explain how things changed over time. It is really important that you have fully completed your revision grids, if you have then you should be able to do this question easily.

17 Question 04- 16 Marks (plus 4 spg)
‘statement.’ How far do you agree with this statement? Explain your answer. This is the biggest question on the paper and expects lots of detail. You need to write a couple of paragraphs supporting the statement and a couple disagreeing with the statement (for example suggesting other reasons were more important) before reaching a judgement. As this is a big question it is likely to cover one of the major events of the specification:

18 Question 04- 16 Marks (plus 4 spg)
Make sure you can come up with a range of reasons and supporting detail for the following questions Why did Countries create alliances? Why was their rivalry/ tension between Germany and Britain? Why did WWI take place? (Who was to blame?) Why did the Western Front become a war of attrition? How did the nature of warfare change during the war? Why did Germany lose the War?
