Lawrence Kohlberg: Theory of Moral Development By: Gabby Ramirez

Lawrence Kohlberg Born October 25, 1927, in Bronxville, New York He studied psychology at the University of Chicago in the late 1940s and 1950s He completed school in 1958 He died in 1987 of a possible suicide, know one knowing the exact date.

The Theory Developed the theory of moral development He says as children develop of identity and self awareness they also develop a scenes of they also develop a scenes of morality.

Levels and Stages of the Theory Level One: Pre-conventional Morality Stage One: Obedience and Punishment Orientation Stage Two: Individualism and Exchange Level Two: Conventional Morality Stage Three: Good Interpersonal Relationships Stage Four: Maintaining the Social Order Level Three: Post-Conventional Morality Stage Five: Social Contract and Individual Rights Stage Six: Universal Principles.

Obedience and Punishment Orientation Children obey because the adults around them tell them to. They Base there moral decision on fear to get punished. They don’t speak for themselves they, listen to the “Big People” around them.

Individualism and Exchange Individuals follow what they want to do and expect everyone to do the same as well. What they think is right involves equal exchange. “What’s In it for me?” “You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours”

Good interpersonal relationships G ood boy/ Nice girl stage. W ishing to please others. T his stage value trust, caring, and loyalty to others for moral judgments. H ow other people see them matters. T hey avoid blame and seeking approval. “ Will people I like approve or disapprove of me?”

Maintaining the Social Order Moral judgments are based on social law. What is important for them to do the law right. They obey authority because they want to do what is right. Rules should be followed to maintain social order. Is my decision consistent with the rules?

Social Contract and Individual Rights They compare the different beliefs of other’s, there beliefs and the law and compare them. Laws get in conflicts with moral principals. Not just about the rules. Is my decision consistent with general legal, cultural, and social traditions.

Universal Principles Many people don’t get to this stage. Look in one another's eyes. Looks in god’s eyes Generally what would got want me to do in this situation?

How can teachers use this? Teachers will know what stage there student is in. They wont be worried about how do I know what this kid thinks. They would know how the kid thinks and how they see things.
