1. Human Immunodeficiency Virus a condition in humans in which progressive failure of the immune system allows life- threatening opportunistic infections and cancers to thrive Video/2:44

2. Helper T cells ~ white blood cells that activate the immune response when a pathogen enters the body and that HIV destroys 2. Healthy people carry about 500 – 1500 helper T cells in about 20 drops of blood. (Treatment for HIV begins at 350 helper T cells.)

3. When HIV attaches itself to helper T cells, the virus forces the T cells to make copies of the HIV………this is (New viruses are released from the T cells and they attach to other cells. The process of replication then starts over. )

As more helper T cells are lost, the immune system is less able to fight off infection. This could take years. 4. When a person’s white blood cell count gets below 200 per milliliter of blood, they are said to have AIDS. Video/15:01 Part 1

5. Acquired Immune Immune Deficiency Deficiency Syndrome Syndrome

6. infections that use the opportunity of a weakened immune system to flourish.

Asymptomatic (no symptoms) could last up to 10 years fatigue, weight loss, fever and diarrhea Possible mental changes White blood cell count drops below 200. Opportunistic infections appear HIV

8. Fluids that transmit the HIV virus: Blood Vaginal Fluid Semen Breast Milk

Blood Blood to blood contact is the most effective way for HIV to transmit. The most likely scenario for this to occur is through sharing needles, (whether it is for tattoos and piercings, testosterone shots, or with intravenous injection equipment).

Vaginal Fluid Vaginal fluid is likely to transmit HIV during sexual contact. In order for transmission to occur on partner must be HIV positive. The fluid must come into contact with the negative person’s blood stream. This can happen through mucus membranes such as the vagina, or through he opening of the penis.

Semen Semen is likely to transmit HIV during sexual contact. In order for transmission to occur one partner must be HIV positive. The fluid must somehow come into contact with the negative person’s blood stream

Breast Milk Breast milk of an HIV positive mother can transmit HIV to the child once it is born, and it is important to use formula. If a mother is HIV positive, there are other precautions to take to ensure that the virus is not spread. A mother will get on a safe HIV regiment for her virus, and the mother may have a cesarean section so the birth can be planned and controlled. Also, once the child is born they are put on HIV medications right away to make sure the virus is not spread. This stops the transmission of HIV in almost 90% of cases!

Testing for HIV: 10. HIV antibodies may be found within 6 – 12 weeks after being infected with HIV. BUT may not show up until 6 – 12 months after infection

11. 2 tests given to test for HIV are: Elisa Test Elisa Test Western Blot Test Western Blot Test

12. There is no cure but drugs can slow down the replication process. 13. AZT is the most common drug used.
