2 1.Why did Congress pass a selective service act?
General Pershing realized that he needed more troops in Europe than were available?

3 2. Why was the convoy system established?
German submarines were sinking hundreds of Allied ships on there way to Europe.

4 3. What divisions existed among Allied troops in Europe?
American troops were kept independent of existing Allied armies, and African Americans were separate from white troops.

5 4. How did Lenin’s take over of Russia affect German war strategy?
Lenin made peace with the Germans Once this happened Germany did not have a 2 front war and could concentrate on pounding French and British lines

6 5. How did Americans help turn the tide of war and send the Germans into retreat?
Americans marched out from Paris to help stop the advancing German army and later they played a vital role in the successful Allied counterattack.

7 6. Why did the Allies refuse to accept a negotiated peace settlement?
They insisted on total surrender.

8 7. What was the cost of WWI, in terms of lives?
50,000 Americans who died in combat represented a small loss relative to the 8 million or so European who died and 1 million civilians who died

Gov’t sold liberty bonds: special bonds to support Allied cause

Created new agencies to over see war related production( what factories should make, how much, safety, pay of workers, etc) Regulated food, and fuel consumtion Price controls: price determined by gov’t on food and how much Rationing: distributing goods to consumers- when you could buy

Censored press Congress passed literacy test for immigrants (one of the first immigration restrictions which led to new immigration laws) Espionage Act: made it illegal to interfere with the draft Sedition Act: made it illegal to obstruct the sale of Liberty bonds or discuss anything “disloyal, profane ect” Police rounded up political radicals (vigilante: citizens that take law into their own hands)

15 4. How did the War change People’s Lives?
Military style activities became more acceptable More jobs for Mexicans on southern farms More jobs for African Americans in northern factories. A new Great Migration occurred with A.A. migrating north to work More jobs for women on farms, telegraph messengers, elevator operator, letter carrier and factory positions Passed the prohibition act: to end the sale and distribution of alcohol because alcohol used a lot of grain which was needed to make the bread to feed people at home & overseas
