Movement

Flexion Bending or decreasing the angle between two bones. Examples: Elbow -‘bicep curl’ the up phase Knee - bending at the knee Trunk - leaning forward at the trunk as in the up movement of a sit up Shoulder - moving the arm forward Hip - swinging the leg forward from the hip

Extension Straightening or increasing the angle between two bones Example: Shoulder - swinging the arm backwards from the shoulder Elbow - ‘bicep curl’; the down phase Trunk - leaning backwards at the trunk Knee – Strightening the knee Hip - swinging the leg backwards from the hip

Abduction Moving a part of the body away from the midline of the body Example: Moving outwards on a star-jump Adduction Moving a part of the body towards the midline of the body Example: Bringing limbs back together in a star-jump abductionadduction

Rotation Twisting of a limb about its long axis Example: - Twisting head to side - Rolling whole arm through shoulder.

Supination Movement of the forearm so that the palm ends ‘up’. Turing a card over or page in the book Pronation Movement of the forearm so that the palm ends ‘down’. Turning a card face down or closing a book

Inversion Movement at the ankle so that the foot is turning inwards so the sole faces in. Eversion Movement at the ankle so that the foot is turning outwards and the sole faces out.

Dorsiflexion This is the action of pulling the foot up Plantarflexion Pointing the toe. Movement at the ankle so that the foot ends up with a pointed toe
