Agenda: HW #5 due Friday. A student just learned about motion and speed from 7 th grade science class. He wants to experiment with what he found as he is riding his bike to McDonalds. He is taking his bike for a ride on Albemarle Road. He sees a tree, mailboxes, another student riding her bike, and a moving bus around him. He travels 100 meters every 20 seconds until he arrives at McDonalds, and then he buys Ms. Phillips french fries because he’s nice like that. 1. Using the passage above, what would be an example of a good reference point listed? WHY? 2. Using the passage above, what would be an example of a bad reference point listed? WHY? 3. What is the student’s speed while biking?

It’s time for…GRUDGEBALL!  Each team gets 10 X’s on the board.  When your team gets a question right, somebody gets to shoot a paper ball into the trash can.  If you answer it right, but don’t make the basket, you still get to remove 2 X’s.  If you make a 2 pointer, you can remove 4 X’s and if you make a 3 pointer, you can remove 5.  If your team gets totally knocked off of the board, you can earn back some X’s by answering your question correctly AND making a basket.

A speedboat can, at full throttle, go 65.0 miles per hour for 1.5 hours. What is the distance of the boat?

Create a graph using the data.

A car travels from ARMS to Panther Stadium, a distance of 18 miles in 45 minutes. It remains at Panther Stadium for 30 minutes at rest. The car then travels from Panther Stadium to the Duke Energy Building, a distance of 5 miles, in 55 minutes. a.What was the total time elapsed for the trip? b.What was the total distance for the trip? c.What was the average speed for the trip?

The car then travels from Panther Stadium to the Duke Energy Building, a distance of 5 miles, in 55 minutes. Assuming that the car was always moving away from ARMS, graph the car’s position over time.

On July 2 nd, 1988, Steve Cram of Great Britain ran a mile in 3.81 min. During his amazing run, what was Steve’s average speed in mi/min?

It is now 9:11 a.m. but when the bell rings at 9:12 a.m. Susie will be late for Ms. Lloyd’s class for the 3 rd time this week. She must get from one side of the school to the other by hurrying down three different hallways. She runs down the first hallway, a distance of 35 feet. The second hallway is filled with students, and she covers its 48 feet length quickly. The final hallway is empty, and Susie sprints its 60 feet length. How fast does Susie need to go to make it to class on time? (Hint: Calculate the total distance. Then calculate her total average speed.)

Create a graph using the data.

Exit Ticket Jen left her house and drove to school in the morning, as shown in the graph below. On her drive to school she realized that she forgot her book bag and had to return home before driving back to school for a 3 hour class. Explain what is happening during each segment of the graph below. Be sure to tell exactly what about the graph leads you to your answer. AB: BC: CD: DF:
