Welcome to Mrs. Lyman’s Language Arts Class WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW??

GRADES! Grades are placed into TWO categories: 40% FORMATIVE- “forming” the idea and learning the concept. Work consists of daily work, homework, quick checks, quizzes. 60% SUMMATIVE- “the summation” of everything you learned. Work consists of tests, essays, projects.

Late Work and Missing Assignments All work is expected to be complete and turned in on the assigned due date! What happens if you forget your work? If your work is in your locker, you may use one of your passes to return to your locker for the work. If you are out of passes, you can take a strike if you wish. If this becomes a constant issue, work will simply be late. If you forgot to do the work or it is left at home, you will take a late grade and sit at the working lunch table AND WORK ON THIS ASSIGNMENT. ALL WORK WILL BE COMPLETED AT SOME POINT! (working lunch, Saturday school, Direct Recovery time) Simply do it the first time! 10% will be deducted for each day the work is late. After 3 days, the work will STILL BE COMPLETED for half credit only.

DID WE DO ANYTHING YESTERDAY? If you are absent, YES, we did something, and you missed it! It is YOUR responsibility to get your missing assignments and to TURN IN the assignments. For each day you are absent you have ONE day to make-up your work. Use your Week at a Glance! Make sure you label your make-up work with your name, date you turn in the work, and assignment title. Place work in your class drawer. DO NOT GIVE WORK TO ME OR A SUBSTITUTE!

CHECK IT OUT!! (IT’S A BOOK CLIP) You are encouraged to use the classroom library! However, you must following the rules… 1. Complete the sign-out sheet 2. A teacher MUST initial the page when you return the book. Bring the sign out sheet, a pen, and the book with you. (Please Note: you are responsible for the book until it has a teacher’s initials next to it!) 3. TAKE CARE OF THE BOOK! 4. Return the book within 3 weeks! (Time can vary according to book’s length.

Computers may be used during class and STARR time as needed. I would advise you to keep a flash drive in your pencil pouch to safe working documents to and from home. NEVER, EVER, use my computer at my desk! Always ask before using the computers in the Student Resource Area. COMPUTER TIME

STUDENT RESOURCE AREA This area is intended to help YOU be successful and independent! Inside the cabinet are the following items: Scissors Glue Sticks Highlighters Color Pencils and Markers Construction Paper Class Drawers are labeled! Extra! Extra!

LET’S GET IT STARTED, IN HERE! When you walk into class, look in the black tray and pick up any handouts needed. Go directly to your seat and sit down. Get your agenda out and copy down that night’s homework assignment. If there is not any, write NONE. Never leave it blank. Put any homework on the right-hand-side of your desk. Start the daily warm-up. If I walk in the room and you are NOT following these directions, a strike will be given!

Pet peeves!! 1. 1. Do NOT laugh, snicker, roll your eyes, or bubully any student in my class! 2. Do NOT talk when I am talking! (Or any adult presenting in the class.) 3.
