Election of 1800– The Revolution of 1800 Thomas Jefferson v. John Adams John Adams was a Federalist Thomas Jefferson was a Democratic- Republican This was the first presidential election to involve political parties

Aaron Burr, who agreed to run as Jefferson’s VP, received the same number of Electoral votes as Jefferson Burr tried to take advantage of the situation and claim the Presidency At this time, whoever came in 2nd place became the Vice President In the Electoral College Jefferson had an 8 vote edge over Adams

Since the vote was tied, the House of Representatives was forced to decide the election 35 votes were taken, each with a tie between Jefferson and Burr The tie was broken after Alexander Hamilton, a Federalist, told people to support Jefferson

Hamilton did this because while he did not agree with Jefferson’s ideas, he truly disliked Burr Jefferson became President, Burr became VP

The 12th Amendment was passed to prevent this from happening again. Now electors must cast separate President and VP ballots

Burr & Hamilton Duel Burr was upset after losing the election He read some negative comments made by Hamilton that were made in public Burr, angry because of both events, challenged Hamilton to a duel

Hamilton fired first after winning a roll of the dice (he fired straight up into the air Burr shot Hamilton in the stomach and killed him Burr was charged with murder but had run away This event effectively ruined his political career

The Jefferson Presidency Jefferson made many changes to the federal government that reflected his political beliefs The first thing he did was give government positions to members of his Democratic- Republican party

Jefferson believed in simple government He reflected these beliefs by dressing plainly and behaving like the common man

Jefferson tried to “shrink” the government He cut costs where ever possible Reduced the size of the army and navy Lowered government expenses Reduced the role of the National Bank Eliminated certain taxes

John Marshall and the Supreme Court John Marshall was the chief justice of the Supreme Court for more than 30 years Marshall was a Federalist who strengthened the power of the court and the federal government

Judiciary Act of 1801 Added 16 federal judges Adams did this at the last minute He placed Federalists in these positions This was done to keep Federalist ideas in place for a long time These new people were called “midnight judges” since Adams appointed them on the last day of his administration

Marbury v. Madison Dealt with the midnight judges Marbury = midnight judge Madison = Secretary of State who was supposed to deliver the papers confirming Marbury would be given his job as judge

Ruled that the act of Congress (Judiciary Act of 1789) was unconstitution al The Supreme Court, by ruling this way, established the idea of judicial review
