2 Did you participate in World Hello Day? (11/21) Anyone can participate in World Hello Day simply by greeting ten people. This demonstrates the importance of personal communication for preserving peace. World Hello Day was begun in response to the conflict between Egypt and Israel in the Fall of 1973. Since then, World Hello Day has been observed by people in 180 countries. People around the world use the occasion of World Hello Day as an opportunity to express their concern for world peace. Beginning with a simple greeting on World Hello Day, their activities send a message to leaders, encouraging them to use communication rather than force to settle conflicts.

3 Chapter 1 Review Each of the 7 groups will be responsible for sharing their response to one of the Section 1, Chapter 1 Questions. –You will have 5 minutes to create a response –Be thorough!!!!

4 Chapter Questions Book I, Chapter 1: "The Period" 1.What is the chronological setting of this opening chapter? What clues enable us to determine "The Period"? 2. How does Dickens indicate the severity of social conditions in both France and England? 3. Who is the "king with a large jaw and a queen with a plain face"? 4. How does Dickens satirize the superstitious nature of the English? 5. What oblique reference does Dickens make to the American Revolution? 6. How in this chapter does Dickens reveal his advocating social reforms, as well as his hatred of social injustice? 7. How does this first chapter involve the first book's title?

5 For Wednesday: Each group will be responsible for presenting the key events and themes of for their assigned chapter. This is not just a summary, but an explanation of each chapters importance. Acceptable presentations require: –Visual image (PowerPoint can be used, but does not count as the visual aide) –Clear group participation –Thorough understanding of chapter content –Definition of 5 words that are either interesting or vital to the understanding of their section. VOCABULARY IS READING!!!!!!
