What’s wrong with this picture? Hepzibah, Lavinia, and Igor are each taking dangerous chances in their lab that only a mad scientist would take! Stop them before it’s too late! 1.Why is it a bad idea for Igor to be eating his sandwich in the lab and drinking out of a lab beaker? 2.Predict what will happen to Lavinia as she holds a container over this flame. What do you see in the picture that could help her avoid this? 3.Hepzibah is doing one thing right. What do you think it is? What dangerous things is she doing?

Email Assignment n Please email qhstechnology@gmail.comqhstechnology@gmail.com n Your email should include your name, the date, and your class period. n Feel free to add a question or comment in your email; however you will not get credit if these three things are not included. n Remember you are emailing a teacher. Please be mature and keep emails professional. Think of it as if you were sending an email for a job interview. Your grade depends on it! n Please use this email address to email questions, comments, or assignments throughout the remainder of the school year. n Please login to the course website at www.mrsmithweb.com www.mrsmithweb.com n Check your progress report and let Mr. Smith know via email if you have any concerns

What is Technology? n Is there a difference between computer literate and technologically literate? n i.e. does technology require computers?
12
What is Technology? n List the 5 things that come to mind when you think of “technology”
13
What is Technology? n List the 5 things that come to mind when you think of “technology”
14
Technology… takes place when people use their knowledge and creativity to extend their abilities, satisfy needs and wants, and solve problems
15
What is Technology? n The practical use of human knowledge to extend abilities, satisfy needs and wants, and to solve problems
16
The Development of Technology n Nomadic era - Hunting and gathering n Agricultural age – plow and sickle n Development of villages where there was farming and raising livestock n 1700’s = Industrial Age n Muscle power was replaced with machine power of the steam engine n Transportation systems originated n Today = Information age n Began in the mid 1800’s n Development of transistor and computer
17
Scientific Method n A good experiment tests only one variable at a time Same experiment without the variable Variable Control Factor that is being tested. Ideally there is only one.
18
The Design Process n Are you an inventor? n Are you innovative? n Design is the process of making new things by planning
19
Invention n Improving and changing a technology that already exists n The process of designing new products Innovation
20
Interactive CD Activity n Visit the “Designed World” Interactive Lab on the Student CD to explore more about some of the technologies in our lives.
21
Principles and Elements of Design n “The Elements of Design” and “The Principles of Design” on the Student CD
22
The Design Process n Much like the scientific method n However you may skip around from step to step http://www.doe.mass.edu/frameworks/scitech/2001/standards/strand4.html
23
The Design Process 1. Identify a Need or Define the Problem 2. Gather Information 3. Develop Possible Solutions 4. Model the Solution 5. Test and Evaluate the Solution 6. Refine the Solution 7. Communicate your Ideas
24
Identify a Need or Define the Problem n Criteria – Things that the product must do or include n Constraints – Limits placed on the design and the designer
25
Gather Information n “No need to reinvent the wheel’ n Research, visit, internet search, talk to people, etc.
26
Develop Possible Solutions n Think of as many design ideas as possible n “Brainstorm” Brainstorming n Process in which group members suggest ideas out loud as they think of them n Ideas are usually written down on a board in front of the group n All advantages and disadvantages of each idea is discussed
27
Model the Solution n Two dimensional and pictorial drawings/sketches n Scale models n Appearance models n Functional models n Prototype n Computer Simulation
28
Test and Evaluate the Solution n Does it do what it is supposed to? n Is it safe to use? n Will it last as long as it needs to? n Is the cost within acceptable limits? n Is it comfortable to use? n Does it have a pleasing appearance? n Does it stay within the criteria and constraints?
29
Refine the Solution n If changes are needed after testing and evaluations you may improve your solution
30
Communicate your Ideas n Designers have to prove their ideas are worthy of manufacturing n Drawings, charts, prototypes, and dialogue are necessary
31
Who Designs Solutions Engineer n Person who uses his or her knowledge of science, math, technology, and communication to solve technical design problems
32
A New Generation of Engineering n Manufacturing Engineers Increase productivity n Aerospace Engineers Aircrafts n Materials Engineers Develop products for strength, weight, etc n Environmental Engineers Design cleaner production methods n Computer Engineers Hardware and software designs
33
Scientific Units n Read Scientific Measurements Packet n Answer Section Review #1-3
34
Scientific Units? meter (m) liter (L) u 1mL = 1 cm 3 gram (g) seconds (s) degrees Celsius (C) u 0 o K = -273 o C u Room temp = 25 o C u Human = 37 o C n Length - n Volume - n Mass - n Time - n Temperature -
35
Matter n Anything that has a mass and a volume
36
Mass n The amount of matter in an object n Depends on number and type of atoms
37
Weight n Measure of attraction due to gravity n On moon weight = 1/6 of Earths
38
Area n Amount of surface occupied by an object n length x width
39
Volume n Amount of space occupied by an object n L x W x H n 1 cm 3 = 1 ml H L W
40
Density n Amount of matter that occupies a given space n mass / volume
43
PerAreaVolumeMassWeightDensity NameCm 2 mlgNg/ml
44
Scientific Method n Can you think of any theories or laws? n Incoming freshman n Evolution n Big bang Theories & Laws
45
Scientific Method Theory Logical explanation based on gathered data What is a theory? Theory of Gravity
46
Scientific Method Theory tested many times (and proven true) What is a law? Law
47
Scientific Method n What goes up must come down… n Right? Theories & Laws
48
Scientific Method n If further observations disprove a theory it must be changed or discarded Theories & Laws What happens if something goes up but doesn’t come down?
49
Unit 1 Test n Bubble in ID (that I give you) n Write in your name on the right n Test name: Unit 1 n Course: Intro to HS Technology n Period: 5/6 n Teacher Name: Smith
