3 Partnership Principles Guide Help and demonstrate what to do without telling or doing everything yourself. Take turns. Only one student should get help from the teacher if the group needs it. Check Pay attention and listen to others. If someone makes a mistake, respond positively and in a helpful way. Help fellow group members find correct responses. Praise Let others know they are doing a good job. Praise others.

4 General Rules Do not let others do all of the work. Use quiet voices. Move quietly. Share materials. Talk about problems, but don’t argue. Be polite to one another. Brainstorm with children to arrive at these or other rules. It is helpful to have a consistency among teachers.

5 Duties of Group Members Specific roles change daily or weekly: Recorder Reader Facilitator – makes sure everyone stays on task; encourages participation from all Gatekeeper – makes sure one person does not monopolize; ensures equal participation Materials/supply handler Summarizer

6 Duties of the Teacher Explain the activity. Monitor groups to make sure they are working in the right direction and that behavior is appropriate. Answer group questions and provide assistance as necessary. Assess group/individual skills. Provide closure for each lesson or activity.

7 Group Structures Numbered Heads Together reviewing basic skills and general information Pairs-Check learning a new skill Inside-Outside Circle answering a teacher’s question with partner Inside-Outside Circle: Variation with Flash Cards Think-Pair-Share time given to think about answer to teacher’s question, then children share with teammates or partners
