Negation Nicht In negative statements or questions, place nicht after the subject, conjugated verb, direct object, and definite time expressions, but before other sentence elements. Ich gehe heute in die Sporthalle. I’m going to the gym today.  Ich gehe heute nicht in die Sporthalle. I’m not going to the gym today. Brauchst du den Fußball? Do you need the soccer ball?  Brauchst du den Fußball nicht? Don’t you need the soccer ball? Die Spieler sind hier. The players are here.  Die Spieler sind nicht hier. The players are not here.

Use kein to negate a noun preceded by an indefinite article or by no article. —Spielen Sie Tennis? —Do you play tennis?  Nein, wir spielen kein Tennis. —No, we don’t play tennis. —Hat er ein Hobby? —Does he have a hobby?  —Nein, er hat keine Hobbys. —No, he has no hobbies.

Negation —Hast du einen Fußball? —Do you have a soccer ball?  —Nein, ich habe keinen Fußball. —No, I don’t have a soccer ball. —Ist das ein Stadion? —Is that a stadium?  —Nein, das ist kein Stadion. —No, that’s not a stadium. —Sind das Basketballspieler? —Are those guys basketball players?  —Nein, das sind keine Basketballspieler. —No, those aren’t basketball players.

Use it to contradict a negative question or statement. —Ich habe keine Freunde. —I don’t have any friends.  —Doch, du hast viele Freunde! —No, you have lots of friends! —Gehst du nicht zum Strand? —Aren’t you going to the beach?  —Doch, ich gehe zum Strand. —Yes, I’m going to the beach..
