Mission Pledge: As part of HMS I will seek to create a positive learning environment in which all students will excel today, tomorrow, and forever. K-W-L: Oxygen

Equations Write the Photosynthesis Equation Write the Respiration Equation

Fermentation Free Write 1.What did we do? 2.What happened? 3.Why did it happen?

ACOS 5 Objective: SWBAT –Discuss photosynthesis, respiration, and fermentation.

Photosynthesis Living things are divided into two groups, producers and consumers, based on how they obtain their food. Energy for Life 3 3

Photosynthesis Plants and many other producers can convert light energy into another kind of energy, chemical energy. The process they use is called photosynthesis. Energy for Life 3 3

Photosynthesis Photosynthesis is when producers use light energy to make sugars, which can be used as food.

Producing Carbohydrates Producers that use photosynthesis are usually green because they contain a green pigment called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll and other pigments are used in photosynthesis to capture light energy. Energy for Life 3 3

Producing Carbohydrates The captured light energy is used to drive chemical reactions during which the raw materials, carbon dioxide and water, are used to produce sugar and oxygen. Energy for Life 3 3

Photosynthesis Equation 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O  C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 Carbon dioxide Water Light Energy GlucoseOxygen +  +

Energy for Life 3 3 Consumers take in food by eating producers or other consumers.

Respiration Some of the energy from the food you eat is used to make you move. Energy for Life 3 3 Some of it becomes thermal energy, which is why you feel warm or hot when you exercise. Most cells need oxygen to break down food.

Respiration Respiration is when, chemical reactions occur that break down food molecules into simpler substances and release their stored energy. Energy for Life 3 3

Respiration Respiration uses oxygen to break down glucose which produces energy along with carbon dioxide and water as wastes.

Respiration Equation C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2  6CO 2 + 6H 2 O+ energy Carbon dioxide WaterGlucoseOxygen +  ++ energy

Breaking Down Carbohydrates When you exhale you breathe out carbon dioxide and some of the water. Energy for Life 3 3 Respiration occurs in the cells of all living things.

Fermentation When cells do not have enough oxygen for respiration, they use a process called fermentation. Energy for Life 3 3

Fermentation Fermentation is used to release some of the energy stored in glucose molecules when cells do not have enough oxygen for respiration.

Fermentation Fermentation reactions release some energy and produce much wastes. Energy for Life 3 3

During photosynthesis and respiration, what is produced in one is used in the other. Energy for Life 3 3

Photosynthesis Photosynthesis produces sugars and oxygen, and respiration uses these products.

Respiration Respiration produces carbon dioxide and water, and photosynthesis uses these products.
