1 How Do Cells Get Energy? All living things need energy
This energy comes from the ! Where do you get your energy?

2 Photosynthesis

3 What is Photosynthesis?
Plants trap energy from the Sun in order to make sugars (glucose) for food All the action takes place in the chloroplast The chloroplast uses the Sun’s energy to turn carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and glucose.

4

5 Chloroplast Photosynthesis occurs in the cholorplasts!
Contains chlorophyll Chlorophyll is a green pigment: a chemical substance that absorbs light!

6

7 Photosynthesis Equation
6CO H2O sunlight > C6H12O O2 carbon dioxide + water + sunlight --> glucose + oxygen

8 Cellular Respiration

9 What is Cellular Respiration?
Plants and animals use oxygen to break down food and release energy! This occurs in the mitochondria, which are the powerhouse of the cell The mitochondria uses oxygen to break down glucose into energy and carbon dioxide

10 Mitochondria Cellular Respiration occurs here!
Animals and plants break down glucose and absorb O2. Release CO2 and H2O.

11

12 Cellular Respiration Equation
+ -> C6H12O O > CO H2O energy glucose oxygen = carbon dioxide + water energy
