The 5 Senses Taste Smell Sight Touch Hearing

Before we move on... Can you say these? Do you notice how the sounds are different? Ba-Ba Da-Da Ga-Ga /b/ /d/ /g/ In the next slide you will read a text that explains the different sounds and how they’re made. Can you complete it using parts of the body? The 5 Senses

/b/, /d/ and /g/ are examples of plosives. That means that they are produced by stopping airflow in the _________, building up pressure and then releasing. /b/ is produced when the _________ meet and stop airflow. /d/ is produced when the tip of the ___________ meets the part of the mouth just behind the upper ___________ (the alveolar). /g/ is produced when the back of the __________ meets the soft part at the back of the ________ (the soft palate). All three sounds are voiced. That means that the vocal chords vibrate while the shapes are made in the _________. mouth lips tongue teeth tongue throat mouth The 5 Senses

Let’s do an experiment... Divide yourselfs into 2 groups. One group will turn their backs to the screen and just listen to what is said. The other group will listen to what is said and see the images. On a piece of paper, write the sound you hear. After your hear/see the clip, get together with a person from the other group and compare what you wrote down. Then switch roles (those who just listened to the clip will now watch it, those who watched it will now just listen to it). The 5 Senses

Video by Jamie Keddie / LessonStream (www.lessonstream.org) The 5 Senses

Did everybody write the same things? If not, why do you think that happened? Which sense did YOU rely most on? The 5 Senses

Discuss! If you had to give up one sense, which would it be? Which would be the second you’d be able to live without? Share your opinion with your group. If you could only keep ONE of the senses, which would it be? Compare your choice to your friends’. Can you think of situations you’ve been through that indicate which sense you depend on the most? Or the least? The 5 Senses

Idioms Now, let’s use our creativity! Get a partner, choose one of these idioms and create a funny definition for it (use it in a sentence!) Bring (one) to one’s senses Come to one’s senses Have more luck than sense Horse sense Knock some sense into someone In a sense Make sense Make sense (out) of someone or something Take leave of one’s senses The 5 Senses

Here are the proper definitions! Bring (one) to one’s senses - to cause someone to return to normal (after being out of control or irrational) Come to one’s senses - to begin thinking sensibly Have more luck than sense - to be lucky but not intelligent Horse sense - Fig. common sense; practical thinking Knock some sense into someone - to strike one, making one smarter, or at least obedient In a sense - in a way; in one way of looking at it Make sense - to be understandable Make sense (out) of someone or something - to understand someone or something Take leave of one’s senses - to become irrational The 5 Senses
