2 INTRODUCING CHANDIGARH Le-Corbusier, the founder of the layout plan of Chandigarh in the year 1952. Chandigarh known as City Beautiful and planned city of modern era spreading over an area of 114 sq.Kms. Capital of two states i.e. Punjab and Haryana Chandigarh got the status of Union Territory in the year 1966.

3 CHANDIGARH PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS Chandigarh has only one Parliamentary Constituency and there is no Assembly. Elections to the House of People for first time held in Chandigarh in the year 1967 and the last was in year 2009. The voter turn out in General Election held in the year 2009 was 65.5%.

4  Voting in Chandigarh in general election 2009 is 65.5% ◦ Highest in last two decades. ◦ Voting increased by 13.44% Compared to last general elections of year 2004.  This increase in the percentage of voting in year 2009 is due to awareness of the voters.  The EPIC and Photo Coverage is approximately 100% Year s of Elections to Lok Sabha Voter’s Turnout 2009 65.5% 2004 52.06% 1999 46.99% 1998 42.36% 1991 35.8%

5 Awareness means that Voter knows about :-  Right to vote  Importance of exercising his/her Right to Vote  Process of Enrollment as an elector  Laws related to enrolment and electoral process

6  Media Campaigning ◦ Advertisement in leading Newspapers ◦ Broadcasting on Radio ◦ Posters and Banners  Awareness Camps of EVMs ◦ About 88 camps were organized in both urban and rural areas ◦ There were 422 polling stations including 404 polling stations and 18 auxiliary polling stations. The ratio of polling station to the awareness camp is 4. ◦ People get aware about there voting right ◦ Get more familiar with EVM machine  Nukkar Natak and Street plays  Involving all the political parties, NGOs, RWAs.

7  Media Campaigning ◦ Advertisement in the newspaper ◦ Broadcast on Radios  Slides in Cinema Halls/Malls  SMS to the public ◦ SMS were send to around 1.5 lakh BSNL subscribers

8  Approx 34000 claims were received from the public for their enrollment in the Electoral Rolls-2011.  After awareness campaign large number of youth applied for registering themselves.  More than 50% of the claims received are of young voters between age group of 18 to 29 years. 9  Door to Door survey will be conducted for enrolment and updating of electoral rolls.  Special campaign for the enrollment of College students  Special Focus to cover the entire slum areas.  Online applications will be received during the process of revision.

10  Advertisement on Social Networking websites.  Advertisement in newspapers through out the year.  SMS will be send to the applicant after decision taken by the AERO on the claims/objections.
