Shoulder and Arm Musculature Session 22

Objectives  To deduce muscle actions; explain based on the attachments sites the line of pull each muscle has around a joint.  Apply your knowledge of the attachment site to common movements.

Axio-appendicular Muscles  Anterior:  Pectoralis Major  Clavicular vs sternal  Pectoralis Minor  Subclavius  Serratus Anterior  Posterior:  Superficial  Trapezius  Latissimus  Deep  Rhomboids  Levator Scap  Scapulohumeral  SITS  Deltoid

Arm Muscles  Anterior:  Biceps Brachii  Short head  Long head (2 joint)  Brachialis  Coracobrachialis  Posterior:  Triceps  Lateral head  Long head (2 joint)  Medial head

 Step 1: Meet with your lecture team (of 3). Review the musculature of the shoulder and arm (include axio-appendicular muscles, and arm muscles) and with the list of muscles provided, write down next to each one which joints it affects.  For each action on the next slide, list the muscles that are involved in the movement, with the primary mover first, down to muscles that only help a little or stabilize.

 using crutches (shoulder, scapulothoracic, elbow joints)  putting dishes away (shoulder, scapulothoracic joints)  pushing a wheelchair (shoulder, scapulothoracic, elbow joints)  doing a deadlift (shoulder, scapulothoracic, elbow joints)

 Step 2: Join up with another group (total 6) Compare your lists and discuss differences.

Your patient cannot hold themselves up on crutches. You know that the supraspinatus must be damaged. A. True B. False

Which motion does not require pectoralis major clavicular head? A. Punching someone B. Rowing C. Putting dishes away D. Giving a high five

Coracobrachialis is cool because… A. It attaches to the coracoid process B. It does both shoulder flexion and horizontal adduction C. It attaches to the middle of the humerus D. It crosses 2 joints

The long head of biceps attaches more proximally on the humerus than the coracobrachialis. A. True B. False

Objectives  To deduce muscle actions; explain based on the attachments sites the line of pull each muscle has around a joint.  Apply your knowledge of the attachment site to common movements.

I would rate today’s class as: (1 is the best, 5 is the worst) A. 1 B. 2 C. 3 D. 4 E. 5

Announcements  No Lab Quiz next week  Prepare terms list anyway!  Maybe even start learning muscle attachments on the bones…!  Elbow group – scheduling conflict, see me at the end
