2 Legacy Support in 802.16m SRD 802.16m Requirements on Legacy Support –A Legacy System: WirelessMAN-OFDMA Reference System WiMAX Forum Mobile System Profile, Rel. 1.0 (Rev. 1.4.0) –Five requirements on backward compatibility have been defined, which are basically including concurrent operation and coexistence with legacy system. –The ability of the disabled legacy-support mode should be reflected into the 802.16m frame structure “IEEE 802.16m shall provide the ability to disable legacy support.” It is essential that the 16m TDD frame structure should be flexible enough to support smooth migration between disabled and enabled legacy-support modes while meeting 802.16m and IMT-Advanced requirements.

3 16m Frame Structure Multiple Access Scheme –In accordance with the requirement of the legacy support for the Wireless MAN-OFDMA reference system, a OFDMA-based multiple assess scheme should be basically considered for 16m air interface. Duplexing Modes: TDD/FD-FDD/HD-FDD –Basically, the commonality between TDD and FDD modes should be considered in the frame structure. The legacy support is currently confined to TDD mode only in 16m SRD. Even though the (half-duplex) FDD operation is now considering in the WiMAX Rel. 1.x., the 16m frame structure for the FDD mode should optimize and support the inherent FDD enhanced features. –FDD frame structure shall support Both full- and half-duplex MS operation. Both unpaired and paired frequency allocations.

4 Spectrum capabilities/scalability –As described in the 16m SRD, 802.16m should support the scalable bandwidths from 5 MHz to 20 MHz. The 16m air interface should be readily extensible to larger channels by reflecting the outcome of WRC ’ 07 for the available bandwidths. –The 16m frame structure should be capable of the operation of a mix of legacy and 802.16m systems with the same or different channel bandwidth. “Systems based on IEEE 802.16m and the Wireless-OFDMA Reference System shall be able to operate on the same RF carrier, with the same channel bandwidth; and should be able to operate on the same RF carrier with different channel bandwidths.” 16m Frame Structure

5 A Concept of Legacy Support for 16m TDD Frame Structure –Zone-based legacy support is a general approach, furthermore, the enhancements for system and control information of 802.16m without legacy support should be allowed in the 802.16m. 16m Frame Structure Smooth Migration Preamble † / FCH † /MAP † : Enhanced Preamble/FCH/MAP for supporting 802.16m with legacy support Preamble new / FCH new / MAP new : New Preamble/FCH/MAP for supporting 802.16m without legacy support 16m Zone #k : New permutation zone for 802.16m without legacy support
