Introduction  Paging operation of 16m system  Network individually pages to indicate the presence of DL traffic pending for the specified AMS and paged AMS performs the network reentry.  In the SRD [IEEE 802.16p-10/0004r1],  Large numbers of devices The 802.16p system shall be able to identify a large number of devices individually or by group.  To efficiently manage the large numbers of idle mode M2M devices, optimized paging operation shall be considered.

Issues on paging in M2M communication (1/2)  Group paging  In M2M system, for some application (e.g., DL traffic notification, UL report triggering, etc) group paging is more efficient than the individual paging in the perspective of network management load (e.g., management of a larger number of M2M devices) / paging load (e.g., the number of paging message, paging message size). Use case) Firmware upgrade of M2M devices, group notification of UL report for smart metering devices.  Group paging identifier M2M devices belong to an subscriber form a group. M2M Group Multicast ID (or M2M subscriber ID) can be assigned to the device in the network entry phase for group paging. Network pages the devices by a group  M2M Group Multicast ID (or M2M subscriber ID) may be included in paging message. M2M device ID is not included in paging message.  or M2M Group Multicast ID (or M2M subscriber ID) may be masked to broadcast A-MAP IE for paging message.

Issues on paging in M2M communication (2/2)  Paging without network reentry  When the network pages the devices for the purpose of DL multicast traffic transmission, paged devices may not perform the network reentry. When the M2M devices receive the DL multicast only traffic from the network, network reentry procedure is not required. Network registration process(i.e., ranging, capability negotiation, registration, device’s authorization) is not required for DL multicast service. Use case) Firmware upgrade service of M2M devices  Thus, according to the service type, paging reaction of M2M device can be classified as following: Paging with network reentry Paging without network reentry

M2M paging scenario  According to the communication type (e.g., HTC or MTC) and service type (e.g., metering devices, fleet management devices, etc), paging type and paging reaction of device can be classified as figure 1. Figure 1. M2M paging scenario

Conclusion  The 802.16p system shall support two types of paging to page the M2M device individually or by group.  Group paging  Individual paging  The 802.16p system shall support two types of paging reaction to simplify the Idle mode operation of M2M device.  Paging without network reentry  Paging with network reentry

Text proposal in AWD [Insert the following texts in 16p amendment document] : 16.2.29 MAC Support of M2M 16.2.29.x Idle mode 16.2.26.x.1 paging operation 16.2.29.x.1.1 Group based paging To page a large number of M2M devices, group based paging shall be supported. To support the group based paging, M2M devices belong to an same subscriber are formed by a group. M2M Group Multicast ID (MGMID) for group based paging shall be assigned to a M2M devices in the network entry phase. The procedure of group based paging is FFS. 16.2.29.x.1.2 Paging without network reentry The paged M2M device for downlink multicast traffic may not perform the network reentry. When the M2M device receives the paging message for downlink multicast traffic, it monitors the downlink channel without performing network reentry procedure until it receives the multicast data.
