1 Cancer Catalyst Fill in the blanks: In mitosis, cells divide ___ time to produce ___ cells that are __________. What is cancer? How do people get cancer? Why is cancer harmful? This one may be a doozy. Write in complete sentences! Don’t talk during the Catalyst!

2 By the end of today, SWBAT…
Objectives By the end of today, SWBAT… Describe the causes, symptoms, and treatments of cancer This one may be a doozy.

3 What is cancer? Key Point #1: Cancer is a disease of mitosis that causes uncontrolled cell growth Cells divide over and over without stopping Produces a mass of cells called tumors

4 Not all tumors are cancerous
Not all tumors are caused by cancer Benign tumors are NOT cancerous Do not spread, usually harmless Malignant tumors ARE cancerous Grow rapidly, spread through the body and invade normal tissue

5 How does cancer kill? Key Point #2: Cancer cells steal nutrients from normal cells, and may stop organs from functioning Steal food from other cells, starving them Tumors press on organs Cancerous organs do not do their job properly Severely emaciated person 60kg tumor removed from a woman in Spain. Obviously, if this was inside of you, it would push on other organs, disrupting their functioning. (Lungs could not fully expand, heart would be compressed, etc.) Comparison between healthy lung and cancerous lung

6 How is cancer caused? Key Point #3: Cancer can be genetic, or caused by exposure to chemicals, viruses, or other factors Genetic: DNA has a mutation (mistake) Chemicals: smoke, alcohol, deep fried foods, etc. Viruses: HPV (cervical cancer), Hepatitis B (liver cancer), HIV (skin cancer) Other factors: Sunlight, old age

7 How do we treat cancer? Key Point #4: The three most common treatments for cancer are radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgery Radiation therapy = use radiation to kill cancer cells Radiation kills all cells… including normal ones!

8 How do we treat cancer? Key Point #4: The three most common treatments for cancer are radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgery Chemotherapy = chemicals kill rapidly growing cells But some rapidly growing cells aren’t cancerous!

9 How do we treat cancer? Key Point #4: The three most common treatments for cancer are radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgery Surgery = cut out the cancerous cells If the cancer has already spread throughout the body, you can’t cut it out from everywhere

10 Rally-Coach Work in partners
2 sets of questions: A and B Alternate reading and answering questions with your partner COACH each other on the answers—don’t just give them away if your partner doesn’t know them If your partner gets the question wrong, ask them again at the end

11 Homework

12 Key Point Wrap-Up Key Point #1: Cancer is a disease of mitosis that causes uncontrolled cell growth Key Point #2: Cancer cells steal nutrients from normal cells, and may stop organs from functioning Key Point #3: Cancer can be genetic, or caused by exposure to chemicals or viruses Key Point #4: The three most common treatments for cancer are radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgery

13 Exit Questions How are mitosis and cancer related?
Describe two causes of cancer Describe one way that cancer can kill its host Which treatment for cancer do you think is most effective? Why? Write in complete sentences! Don’t talk during the Exit Question!
