14-11-2005 Concluding Remarks on SDA’s Presentations and related Reports A. Hilgers

14-11-2005 General remarks 29 SDA presentations –10 on ionospheric effects –9 on ground effects –4 on service for SC industry –1 on service for aircraft industry –5 on Scientific monitoring

14-11-2005 On Ionospheric effects Well established services with demonstrated user interest and needs. Sustainability: customer (+/-), (Science?) Agencies (+/-). Potential case for space elements (start demonstration with Champ, may continue with SWARM & METOP). Splinter: Wednesday, 15:30-16:30

14-11-2005 On SC and aircraft SDA presentations Demonstrated user interest and needs. Relatively innovative type of services. Sustainability: customer (+/-), Agencies (++). Potentially strong case for space elements (LEO, GTO, MEO, GEO, Hitchhiker). SDA’s had strong gaps. Serious extrapolation work from SEA required. Splinter: Thursday, 15:30-16:30

14-11-2005 On Ground Effects SDA presentations Many well established services with demonstrated user interest and needs. A few more exploratory forecast based services. Sustainability: customer (+/-), (Science, geological survey?) Agencies (+/-). Potential case for space elements (L1 solar wind monitoring). Splinter: Tuesday, 15:30-16:30

14-11-2005 On scientific monitoring SDA presentations Many well established services with assumed long lasting scientific interest. A few more exploratory new monitoring type of activities. Sustainability: customer (-), (Science) Agencies (+/-). Potential case for space elements (L1 solar wind monitoring). Need to consolidate the case of benefit of such measurements (SEA support?) Splinter: Tuesday, 18:00

14-11-2005 General Market covered by SDA is mainly on small scale services with ~10kE/Y cost. Coordinated approach often appreciated. Mixed of scientific/application interest. Agencies/government support seems still needed. Case must be consolidated.

14-11-2005 Next Each topical group needs to: consolidate the various topical reports. Investigate balance between customer/agency required effort (note that ESA main role is in building space elements). Investigate benefit of coordinated approach. Interact with Tim Woodward for the cost/benefit analysis. Resume plenary discussion on Friday.
