1 Present Perfect FORM USE 1. To show an unfinished past. "For five minutes," "for two weeks," and "since Tuesday" are all durations which can be used with the Present Perfect. Examples: We’ve (We have) lived here since 1996. (and we still live here now) I’ve written three letters today. (I might write more letters today) 2. To describe an action happened at an unspecified time before now. The exact time is not important. Examples: I have seen that movie twenty times. John has lost his job. (He doesn’t have a job now.) has/ have + past participle

2 Present Perfect Example: Elena has arrived. Past ___________________________Now Compare: Elena arrived at 2 o’clock. Past __X_________________ Now

3 Present Perfect You can use the Present Perfect to describe your experience. Examples: I have been to France. This sentence means that you have had the experience of being in France. Maybe you have been there once, or several times. I have been to France three times. You can add the number of times at the end of the sentence. I have never been to France. This sentence means that you have not had the experience of going to France.

4 Present Perfect REMEMBER! Don’t use specific time expressions with the present perfect except after the word “since”. She has taken painting lessons last year. She took painting lessons last year. She has taken painting lessons since 2007.

5 Present Perfect Put the verbs in brackets into the present perfect or past simple. Anne Tan is one of the most interesting people I ______ (meet): she is only twenty- five, but she ______ (travel) to over fifty different countries. Five years ago, she _____ (be) a typist in KL, but she ______ (decide) to give up her job and see the world. Since then, her life _____ (change) completely.
