Define the term nutrition. The process of providing or obtaining the food necessary for health and growth.

4 Vitamins Organic compounds required by humans in small amounts from the diet. Organic: Of, relating to, or derived from living matter.

5 Minerals Elements that originate in the earth and cannot be made by living systems.

6 Vitamin A Helps eyes function normally in the dark, promotes growth and healthy skin, helps reduce certain cancers. (fish, dark green and orange vegetables)

7 Vitamin C Helps form connective materials that hold cells together, protects from bruising, keeps gums healthy, strengthens immune system. (oranges, grapefruit, lemons, strawberries, tomatoes, green leafy vegetables)

8 Folate (folic acid) B-Vitamin that helps make new cells, may reduce the risk of heart disease. (asparagus, avocado, bananas, cabbage, cantaloupe, green leafy vegetables, grains)

9 Iron Is needed for red blood cell formation and function, prevents anemia. Anemia = Lack of red blood cells Red blood cells carry oxygen (enriched breads and cereals, red meat, dried beans, blueberries, and broccoli)

10 Calcium Mineral responsible for the development of healthy teeth and bones. (milk, cheese, yogurt, green leafy vegetables, tofu, canned fish)

11 Sodium Mineral required by the body for fluid balance.
(found in many foods, especially processed foods, frozen meals, soups, and canned foods) *Diets high in sodium can cause High Blood Pressure

12 Empty Calorie Food A food that contains little or no nutrients, but still contains calories

13 Nutrient-Dense Foods that contain many healthy nutrients
