1 Name of Historical Person Character of Person? What they did ?Where they did it? Paul Revere  Diligence is hard work. Paul Revere worked at many types of jobs to take care of his family.  To value Liberty means to want freedom from the control of others. Revere and other Patriots worked hard for liberty from British rule. Silversmith Family man Warned colonies about the British coming Frederick Douglas  Frederick Douglass became a great writer, speaker, and fighter for civil rights.civil rights  He wanted liberty.liberty.  Douglass demanded justice, or fair treatment.  Freedom of conscience and expression means that people have the right to think and say what they believe. Born into slavery Escaped into freedom Worked for civil rights for African Americans Started the North Star paper Worked with Susan B. Anthony Susan B. Anthony  Susan B. Anthony’s diligence helped end slavery and win equal rights for women.  Justice means fair and equal treatment under the law. Anthony wanted everyone to have the same rights, so she worked for justice. Justice Quaker-all have civil rights. 2 Mary Bethune McCloud  Her family worked hard to send her to school.  African American children could not go to public schools. Bethune believed that all children needed a good education.  In 1904, Bethune started a school for African American girls.  Today the school that Bethune started is called Bethune- Cookman College. Franklin D. Roosevelt  The United States economy was not doing well.  Roosevelt became President in 1933.  Many businesses and banks closed.  Millions of workers lost their jobs.  In the 1930s, he signed a series of laws called the New Deal. Marshall Thurgood  Justice is fair and equal treatment under a system of laws.  Marshall worked for justice for African Americans by trying to end the unfair policy of separate but equal. 3 Cesar Chavez  Fought for the rights of farm workers  Started a group for farm workers’ rights that took part in strikes.  During the strikes, farm workers refused to pick crops until their pay and treatment improved  Convinced people to stop buying crops that came from farms that treated workers badly.  His work affected trade around the world. Eleanor Roosevelt  In 1946, she became the leader of a group at the United Nations.  Members of the group cooperated, or worked together, to define and list the rights all people had.  Finished their document, known as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in 1948.  The declaration lists rights such as freedom of religion and the right of all people to fair treatment by their government. Lyndon B. Johnson  He respected the authority of senators from other states.authority  Respected civil rights (the basic freedoms that citizens all share).
