How are the chemical products of the light- trapping reactions coupled to the synthesis of carbohydrates? What kinds of photosynthetic adaptations have evolved in response to different environmental conditions? What interactions exist between photosynthesis and cellular respiration?

3 How has the terrestrial environment influenced plants? Limiting factors… Water (humidity) Light Soil Nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, other minerals Wind Competition Cooperation…symbiosis

4 What is the basic anatomy of a plant? Waxy Cuticle Jacketed Gamantia Roots Stems Leaves

5 Plants Bryophyte:nonvasular spore producer, dominant haploid gametophyte and reduced diploid sporophyte. Needs water to reproduce Pterophyte: vascular spore producer, reduced haploid, dominant sporopyte…sporangium on fronds Gymnosperms: pollen is male gametophyte and ovule is female gametophyte. Food produced first, then baby Angiosperm: double fertilization, stamen and carpals (pistal)

6 Angiosperms: Monocots vs. Dicots Monocots: fibrous root system, one cotyledon, parallel veins, scattered vascular bundles in stems, floral parts in 3’s Dicots: taproots, two cotyledons, netlike veins, vascular bundles in stems, floral parts in 4’s and 5’s.

7 Roots Function? Root hairs Some have advantageous roots, ie. Mangroves, corn.

8 Stems Function? Alternating nodes…point where leaves attach Auxiliary buds Terminal bud…apical dominance Modified stems: tubers, rhizomes, stolons (runners), bulbs

9 Leaves Function? Blade Petiole Simple, compound, doubly compound Some adaptations: tendrils, spines (stems do photo), succulents store water, colorful leaves to attract insects

10 Tissues of plants Dermal Vascular –Xylem: tracheids and vessel elements –Phloem: sieve-tube members and companion cells Ground -pith, cortex
