Look Forward to Complex Aerospace Systems Exchange (CASE) 2016 Craig Willis Systems Engineering Technical Committee September 2015

Overall CASE Objectives To provide a forum for addressing cross-discipline systems engineering topics associated with Complex Aerospace Systems To tackle the most important system development issues facing aerospace and space chief engineers, program managers, and system engineering professionals today:  Late discoveries and test failures  Unpredicted system interactions  Cost overruns and delays  Managing large diverse and geographically dispersed teams  Balancing ‘Test as you Fly’ with Model-Based Engineering to verify complex SoS’ To engage the large number of aerospace professionals that may not be deep in a specific discipline, but are working on complex development and production programs that translate theory into real world capabilities, often performing at the limits of technology To serve the needs of engineers in Aerospace that are advancing their careers from individual contributors to Systems Leads, Chief Engineers, and Program Managers 2

Innovative ecosystem Environmental impact Orbital Debris Who is the governing body for Space? Who wants the data (Google, etc…) How do we process this ‘big data’? What does the workforce look like Emerging markets / competitors High powered lasers (and other Sci-Fi become reality discussions) CASE 2016 - Envisioning a Free Market Space Human Aspect / Cultural / Social / Organizational Tie in to UAS discussion. Once the launch vehicles are cheap enough, “Anyone can put up a satellite” Who is the customer of the future? Government, Industry, Private Individuals, Universities? How to instill a ‘startup’ mentality in a large company? How can we innovate quickly in increasingly distributed organizations / locations

Academic Workshops / Round Tables Applied Complexity (SPACE 2016 or SciTech 2017 or both) Forum 360°Session 1 – CASE Theme kickoff (TBC) Forum 360°Session 2 – CASE Focused Content (TBC) Forum 360°session will be 3 concurrent sessions in the afternoons Will not run concurrent with technical sessions Total of 9 Sessions for Tues, Wed, and Thurs Single CASE Technical / Program Track Session 1 1.5 - 2 Hours Session 21.5 - 2 Hours Session 31.5 - 2 Hours Session 41.5 - 2 Hours CASE 2016 Look Forward – Format

Implementing CASE Content into all Forums CASE (Complex Aerospace Systems Exchange) Steering Committee September 2015

CASE Content Details Tracks/Sessions  CASE-content based sessions, multiple sessions would make up a track  Integrated into all Forums – treated as a regular session or set of sessions Experiential Executive workshop  Focus would be more strategic, hands-on experience Experiential Tactical workshop  Focus would be more tactical, hands-on experience (e.g., lego exercise) Forum 360  Experts focusing on CASE-content topics, typically a panel format Publications  Need to define  Some ides include: –“How to” for implementing complex systems content for ongoing projects –Website of resources –Aerospace America articles 8 Support of TCs, PCs, YPs, Group Directors, TAC, AIAA marketing, and Industry is key to implement CASE Content into all Forums
