2. NATO was first founded after World War II ended. At that time, large numbers of Soviet troops remained in Eastern Europe as occupation forces. Governments set up by these forces that were pro- communist and have come to be called the Warsaw Pact countries.

The Warsaw Pact is the name commonly given to the treaty between Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the Soviet Union, which was signed in Poland in 1955 and was officially called 'The Treaty of Friendship, Co-operation and Mutual Assistance'. It was a military treaty, which bound its signatories to come to the aid of the others, should any one of them be the victim of foreign aggression.

4. The Warsaw Pact was called in response of NATO. The Warsaw Pact consisted of Albania (until 1968), Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany (until 1990), Hungary, Poland and Romania. They had the same ideas of NATO. This is one reason why the Cold War had no battles, they were scared of a global or nuclear conflict again.

5. The purpose of NATO was to help defend 15 Western nations from Soviet Russia’s massive amount of troops on the border of Western Germany.

6. NATO was made because the 15 Western nations saw Soviet Russia as a threat, so they said that if Soviet Russia were to attack any one nation, it would be considered an attack on all of them.

7. NATO wasn’t built of many armed forces, it consisted of 15 ambassadors from each of the 15 Western nations. The ambassadors would get together and talk about what they’d plan on doing to prepare for a possible Soviet Russian attack.

8. NATO's policy is based on two principles. The first is to maintain adequate military strength and political unity to deter aggression and other forms of military or political pressure. The second is to pursue a policy aimed at a relaxation of tensions between East and West - a policy based to a large extent on general military strength.

9. Today, NATO is ideally an outstanding way for the twenty-six different countries and nations to come together. As an organization, the leaders meet with one another to make decisions about security issues and defensive issues against allied attacks. Also, NATO has armed forces, made up of civilians of all twenty-six countries. They defend and aid countries in crisis, just like Darfur. The North Atlantic Council is made up on knowledgeable political and military leaders represented by each country. This council comes to a consensus on making important decisions on what political and military tactics to use, for daily activity.

10. The NATO flag has one single and true meaning. The means to stretch and unite the 15 Western Nations. The Compass Rose represents that no matter where you are in the world, at least one of the Nations are with you.

11. NATO were not the only group of people with symbols on their flag. The Warsaw Pact consisted of the 8 Nations opposing NATO. The Soviet Flag has two symbols. One a sickle, representing agriculture and the other a hammer, representing their power.
