2 STEP 1 – OBSERVE THE SENTENCES Read the sentences below. Write down any observations that you notice on a sheet of notebook paper. My dog Iroh loves his stuffed baboon. He carries it everywhere.

The word “Iroh” is blue and capitalized because it is a proper noun.

The word “Iroh” is blue and capitalized because it is a proper noun. The words “he” and “it” are orange because they are pronouns.

7 STEP 3 – DEFINE THE TERMS Based on the observations you have made from the sentence define the term “common noun. ”

8 STEP 3 – DEFINE THE TERMS Common Noun – a person, place or object. Ex: dog, toy, flower

9 STEP 3 – DEFINE THE TERMS Based on the observations you have made from the sentence define the term “proper noun.”

10 STEP 3 – DEFINE THE TERMS Proper Noun – the specific name of a person, place or object. Ex: Mrs. Teff, Bob, Waukee Middle School

11 STEP 3 – DEFINE THE TERMS Based on the observations you have made from the sentence define the term “pronoun.”

12 STEP 3 – DEFINE THE TERMS Pronoun– a word that takes the place of a noun after the noun. Ex: Iroh = He. Mrs. Teff = she. Mr. and Mrs. Teff = they. The computer = it.

13 STEP 4 – LET’S PRACTICE TOGETHER! Identify the common noun in the following sentences: The football was found at Waukee Middle School. Someone left a hat in Mrs. Teff’s room. The Waukee Warriors have super spiffy t-shirts.

15 STEP 4 – LET’S PRACTICE TOGETHER! Identify the proper noun in the following sentences: The football was found at Waukee Middle School. It had a hole in it and was losing air. Mrs. Teff likes to keep her cart neat and tidy. She appreciates when you put your pencils in the labeled bins. Last weekend Mrs. Teff painted her kitchen. Can you guess what color it is?

16 STEP 5 – YOUR TURN! On a sheet of notebook paper, identify the common nouns, proper nouns, and pronouns in the following sentences. Mrs. Teff loves pumpkin spice lattes from Starbucks. She could drink them everyday. Elphie, Mrs. Teff’s cat, is very lazy. She likes to lay and watch the birds all day. Chowder is a rambunctious hedgehog. He loves to run on his wheel. He ran so fast that he broke it!

17 STEP 6 – NOUN CHARADINARY To play noun charadanary (pictionary/charades), select students will choose a card. That card will have a common noun, proper noun, or pronoun listed. Students will then have to draw or act out the word on the card. Individuals in the class must guess the noun, but ALSO must identify if the noun is a common noun, proper noun, or pronoun. Remember, in Charadinary you cannot speak or write letters or numbers. Good luck!

The phrases “picked up her shoes” and “might have not tripped” are green because they are verb phrases.

24 STEP 3 – DEFINE THE TERMS Verbs can have active or stative meanings Stative MeaningActive Meaning Do you have a car? (own)They are having dinner at the moment. (eating) You are my best friend. (it’s a fact.)She’s being silly again. (behaving in a silly way. That soup smells good. (has a good smell) He is smelling the soup. (sniffing at) The milk tastes sour. (has a sour taste) I was just tasting the food. (testing)

26 STEP 4 – LET’S PRACTICE TOGETHER! Identify the verb in the following sentences: Mrs. Teff graded homework after dinner last night. Mr. Teff played lacrosse in high school. My dog chased his ball all around the yard.

27 STEP 4 – LET’S PRACTICE TOGETHER! Identify the verb phrases in the following sentences: Mrs. Teff is reading a book called In Cold Blood. Yesterday, my neighbor’s dog was so loud it could have woken up the whole neighborhood. After eating, you should wait thirty minutes before swimming.

28 STEP 5 – VERB MAD LIBS Grab a copy of your verb/verb phrase mad lib assignment. You may work with a partner, but YOU MUST complete your own mad lib (and no it cannot be identical to your partner’s…) When you are finished you may share quietly with a neighbor.
