2. Nouns Nouns are a person, place and/or thing
They are grouped into 3 categories:
Common nouns
Proper Nouns
Pronouns

3. Common Nouns
Common Nouns are person/animals, places, or things. All of these are physical things you can see or touch.
Example:
Please leave your shoes by the front door.
Shoes are things and so is door. You can touch both of these things so they are a common noun.
Let’s go to the store later.
Store is a place, so it is a common noun too.
The girl never made it to the house.
Girl is a person and house is a place, both of these are a common noun.

Identify the common noun:
- The boys fell asleep before it was over.
- They painted the new restaurant today.
- I left my notebook at work.

5. Proper Nouns Ms. Simmons went to work late.
Proper Nouns give a name to a common noun.
Example:
Ms. Simmons went to work late.
Instead of “The woman went to work late”, you give the woman a name and it becomes Ms. Simmons.
Publix is being sued by a few of its customers.
Publix is the name of a store so it is a proper noun.
I love the new Air Jordan sneakers.
In this sentence Air Jordan’s are the name of the sneaker.

7. Pronouns
Pronouns are the opposite of proper nouns. They give no name to a person.
Pronouns are: we, they,it, us, I, them, they , you, him, her, he and she.
Example:
He ruined his sisters’ dress.
“He” is someone, just not the name of the person.
She and I went to the same school.
“She, I” are talking about people, just not the name of the people.
They had a sleepover this weekend.
“They” is referring to a group of people, but we do not know the names of the people.

Identify the pronouns:
He chose to go to school instead of home.
They won tickets to the movie premiere.
I don’t like to eat raw food.

9. Adjectives She bought a matching blue belt with her hat.
Adjectives describe a noun.
Adjectives make a sentence or story interesting by adding descriptions.
She bought a matching blue belt with her hat.
The noun is belt so that means the adjective blue is describing the belt.
The cheese was old, green and moldy in the refrigerator.
Cheese is the noun so that means “old, green and moldy”, is the adjective.
We watched the beautiful sunrise this morning.
Sunrise is the noun so beautiful is the adjective because it is describing the noun.

10. Review: Adjectives Adjectives describe a ______. Identify:
Officer O'Brien followed her to a small, spotless apartment with shiny brass fixtures. Mother Fletcher, dark eyes bright, told him to call her an ambulance on his radio. When he asked her age, she answered, "Full-grown." The ambulance came, he wrote up the incident, and forgot about it.

11. Action Verbs Action verbs is something a noun does. Example:
The boy ran home.
Boy is the noun, what did he do? He ran. Ran is the verb.
The vase fell off the table.
Vase is the noun. What did it do? It fell . Fell is the verb.
Fighting is not tolerated in my class.
Class is the noun. What is not allowed?“fighting”, which is the verb.

“Officer O'Brien spoke to the old woman when he saw her shopping. He started to write down what she said; he wanted to figure out how old she really was. Even though he subscribed to the precinct motto not to take work home, he told his wife, Kathy, about her. One night he mentioned that she had invited the O'Briens to Christmas dinner. He had said that yes, they would come. But he said that no one would really expect them to. He and Kathy argued. Their daughter, Meaghan, six, wanted to go too.”

13. Verb Tenses Marshall played the trumpet in school.
Verb tenses tell whether a verb happened in the past, present or future.
Ex. call, will call, called
Marshall played the trumpet in school.
Play is the verb. Play(ed) is the tense that shows it happened in the past.
We will sing tomorrow at the fundraiser.
Sing is the verb. “Will sing” is the tense that shows it has not happened yet.
I like to play Chinese checkers.
Play is the verb and the tense “to play” is present tense and is currently happening.

14. Review: Verb Tenses
Verb tenses tell whether a verb happened already, is currently happening or will happen?
Identify:
“She carried him down nine floors to the basement, to a small room with the building's electrical equipment, and left him there despite his pleas. She was eating dinner when the lights went out. "Que paso!" Papa said. Someone outside the door yelled that people were stuck in the elevator; Mama was groping for candles.Lucinda ran downstairs, knowing that Chauncey had jumped against a switch, but the fire department had gotten there first.
