Properties of Matter Unit Week 30 Directions 1.Prepare your desk for science. Science notebook Signed scientific method test 2.Use voice level 2 (conversation) discuss the following question: What is a magnifier? What are some examples of magnifiers? Why do we need them? If you have any test questions, you may come and ask me now!

Targets & Warm Up Targets: Students will use magnifiers to see and describe details and features of objects. Warm Up: What is a magnifier? What are some examples of magnifiers? Why do we need them?

Physical Properties What parts of our bodies do we need to use to observe most physical properties? Eyes Ears Hands Nose Mouth How strong are our eyes? Can we see EVERYTHING we need to with just our eyes?

Table of Contents DateTitlePage 4-24-15Magnifiers & Matter70 Once you are finished with the Table of Contents, go to page 70 and add the title and date to the top of the page.

Magnifier (Magnifying Device) A magnifier is a lens or combination of lenses that makes something appear larger. Microscope – magnifier of the image of small objects Telescope – a magnifier of images of distant objects Magnifying glass/hand lens – magnifier of the image of small objects

Magnifiers… Let us see details or features of an object or material that we can’t see with our eyes alone 2x magnification power means that the magnifier will make objects appear two times as large as they actually are.

Larger circle = 3x magnification Smaller circle = 6x magnification Hand Lens

Magnifying objects with a hand lens (magnifying glass) Wood cube Aluminum foil Velcro Needle eye & thread Toothbrush bristles Toilet paper Salt Sugar

Rotations 1.Look at your item using your eyes only 2.Use a hand lens to observe the item 3.Write down a phrase about what details or features you can see more clearly by using the hand lens

Wood Magnification: x10

Velcro Magnification: x15

Needle and Thread Magnification: x16

Magnification: x40 Toothbrush Bristles

Salt and Sugar Magnification: x100

Aluminum Foil Magnification: x100

Toilet Paper Magnification: x500

Choose one item and… Write a 4 th grade paragraph to describe how a magnifier helps you see an item in more detail. Describe what features or details you can see with the help of a magnifier. Be sure to write about the hand lens and microscope. As you write, I will show you how an item looks under a real microscope

Onion Magnification: x400

Reflection Question Why are hand lenses and microscopes important to scientists?

Targets (Revisited) Students will use magnifiers to see and describe details and features of objects.
